Minor spoilers ahead!
Minsc
The Ultimate Funny Side Kick Character
Starting with the minimum amount of main character energy, we have Minsc. in Baldur's Gate 3He perfectly embodies the role of a funny yet powerful comedic sidekick who has your back. He may not be the sharpest pencil in the box, but he will be loyal and good to the end.
He's also a nice throwback to earlier games in the franchise, and while his hamster sidekick Boo is one of the best things in the entire game, he's probably not someone who carries the entire plot of the game on his shoulders.

A seasoned veteran who mentors the main characters
Before that was the main character Baldur's Gate Franchise, Zahira is another returning personality Baldur's Gate 3. She's still iconic, but does she have the main character vibes? Probably not. That's okay, though, because she manages to deliver a different, important role.
In Act 2, she becomes a bit of a mentor to our characters, relying on us to figure out how to defeat Ketherick while helping us in the final battle. She's a powerful druid, and as a seasoned veteran adventurer, it's best for her to step back and let the other characters stand in the spotlight.
Halsin
A healthy supporting character
In Act 1, we meet Halsin the druid when we rescue him from the goblin camp. He is an essential part of the plot as he is the one who shows us the way to Moonrise Towers and offers to come with us. For that matter, Halsin isn't the most developed character in the cast, and he has a clear side character in the role from the get-go.
Baldur's Gate 3: The 10 Best Female Characters, Ranked
Baldur's Gate 3 is home to an array of fantastic characters; Here are some of the best female characters that gamers can encounter.
While it's great to have him fighting on your side as a powerful druid, and even having him as a romance option, Halsin is definitely better off staying on the sidelines and watching this whole story of mindflares and parasites come to a conclusion for the sake of Grove and his research.
Mynthara
The adversary became an uneasy ally
Another great sidekick character, Minthara, represents the classic media trope of a minor villain becoming an uneasy ally. There's something completely satisfying about having a former antagonist join you on a quest because your interests are aligned, and you're both hungry for revenge.
In that sense, his role as a side character can easily be much bigger than some of the main characters, because it presents an interesting, alternative path to the main story. Not all are initially victims of absolutes. Or, at least, they don't believe themselves to be victims in the first place.
Astarion
He has his own story
Astarion, although a great character with a fascinating backstory and plenty of charisma, is an original character that is less connected to the game's main quest than the rest. His story takes you on a detour to Cazador's estate in Act 3, and it takes a while to fully develop and blossom. When this happens, he experiences one of the story's best, most bizarre moments.
What's interesting about him is that he's probably the one character who doesn't benefit much from the destruction of the Netherbrain, as it condemns him back to the shadows of vampire life. For more morally questionable playthroughs, he might be a solid main character, but Netherbrain isn't his top priority.
Karlach
Aside from Gortash, his connection to the main story is loose
Among characters with a strong connection to the main plot, we have Karlach. His backstory mostly revolves around Gortas, one of the main leaders of the Absolute Cult. In this sense, he has a personal stake.
She also has her whole side plot with Will at the beginning of the game, which brings an interesting dynamic to the camp, but it's hard to picture her in a main role, her story involves the events of Avernus and the players there, as well as her heart malfunctioning engine. Karlach serves as a side character that we grow to deeply love and care for, someone we want to protect as we battle the cult of absolutes.
shadow heart
He is one with the artwork
One of the game's main objects is a mysterious artifact that Shadowheart is tasked with retrieving by her mother Superior. A member of the Sharran cult, the intention is to use the tool to his advantage, to prevent it from falling into the hands of the wrong people, it is the cult of githyanki or absolute.
It so happens that there is much more to an artwork than we think; Most importantly, one of the main characters who can help us deal with the Netherbrain at the end of the game. Shadowheart owning the artifact places her at large as a potential main character, as does her inner turmoil about her trust and distrust in Shar.
the storm
A perfect primed for dealing with Netherbrain
Although Gale is not given an immediate connection to anything happening in his past, his quest makes up for it towards the end of Act 1 when the players emerge from the Underdark. Gale's tampering with Netherage magic has led him to contain within himself an unstable orb of magical power that can destroy an entire city, all because of his obsession with Mystra.
Baldur's Gate 3: Best Original Characters for 1st Playthroughs, Ranked
Each Baldur's Gate 3 Origin Character has its positive aspects, but some are better suited to the early game than others.
Determined to somehow make amends with his goddess, events Baldur's Gate 3 And the threat of Netherbrain gives him the chance to do exactly that. He is asked to become a sacrifice to save Baldur's Gate from the cult's influence, the ultimate tale of utter heroic selflessness. What could be the main character-code?
Wyll
A deep, personal stake that is often overlooked
Wyll doesn't usually get enough love as a companion, but he exhibits extremely strong main character energy. Cambian is a complex character despite being labeled as a goody-two-shoes, haunted by his pact with Mizora. It's his sense of justice that drives him to agree to such a deal, and it's that deal that gets him into constant trouble. Baldur's Gate 3.
When the safety of Baldur's Gate and his father's safety are directly threatened by the Absolute Cult and their influence through the Gortas, the stakes for Wiel are greatly quadrupled. It's easy to see him as a hero returning home to save his father and the city he loves, and finally being forgiven by the Ravenguard for his deal with Mizora. Overall, it's a perfect setup for the story, and brings more complexity to his character that isn't suited to playing as a sidekick.
Lae'zel
Baldur's Gate 3 is his story from start to finish
Lae'zel's story is a hero's quest like no other. As Vlakith's most devout servant, she is inspired in the ways of Githanki and her journey begins as she searches for the mindflayer's head to prove her worth as a warrior of her queen. When she ends up tadpoleed instead, she has the greatest motivation of all the characters to heal herself and find the artifact Githanki is hunting.
There are also some major story twists and turns in between that significantly impact Vlakith's unwavering belief in his superiority. Not to mention, Githanki plays a major role in the final act of the story, as the two factions begin to tear each other apart and fight for control. Along with this, it becomes her adventure to discover the truth not only about her people, but also about herself. With her strong-willed personality, she is easily the best choice for the lead character role Baldur's Gate 3.
