Baldur's Gate 3's party mates are universally beloved, and for good reason. There is incredible chemistry within the main cast, and the voice acting and motion-capture work bring these wonderfully written characters to life. There is no better place to observe this alchemy in action than during the inter-companion dialogue that plays out as the party searches for Ferun.
This “party banter” has become a staple of party-based RPGs. It's a way to bring out the personalities of the characters and projects a partnership between the entire party, rather than just the player character and each individual friend. Baldur's Gate 3's party banter is incredibly biting and sarcastic, a common move between friends.
The best of one-liners
The community recently came together to discuss which inter-collaborator dialogue is best in a Reddit thread by ChristyColin. There are definitely some good candidates on display and, even though I have a soft spot for Lae'Zel's dry humor, it seems that Wyll is undoubtedly the king of breath in Baldur's Gate 3.
Wyll: I believed that the beauty of first love was insurmountable. But Gail – you're so tolerant now that you've found your second.
Gail: I will take that comment with the sincerity and good will that I intended.
The banner above, fronted by a crockpot, is representative of Wyll's satire. There's no doubt that Blade of Frontiers has a good heart, but he's certainly not opposed to a sarcastic remark or two.
hell0kitt details the interaction between Shadowheart and Wyll at the Basilisk Gate, where Shadowheart insists on talking about the gallows and hanging despite Wyll not engaging in the conversation. This prompts Wyll to finish the dialogue, “What a picture you've drawn. Too detailed, too colorful … too unnecessary,” more or less telling Shadowheart to stop being so strict.
There is also a popular interaction between Gale and Minthara that is often quoted by Dro's fans, this time posted by Mize-of-Light.
Mynthara: You have older siblings, sorcerer?
Gail: You're going to say something terrible, aren't you?
Mynthara: In Menzoberanjan, every male child born after having two sons in the house is killed at birth because it is useless even for reproduction. You have the aura of a third child about you.
Gayle is the butt of many of these cutting comments, perhaps because of his relativism and his growing God complex. My favorite banner piece was posted by Syndelta, which lists a brief interaction between Astarion and Lae'Zel.
Lae'Zel: I'm totally attractive, I'll let you know. At Crèche K'liir, I was known for my bright smile and charisma.
There are many other good options in the original thread. If you want a kick out of it and are a habitual wiki scroller like me, you can check out the dedicated banner pages for each character on the Baldur's Gate 3 Wiki.
Baldur's Gate 3 is the long-awaited next chapter in the Dungeons and Dragons-based series of RPGs. Developed by Divinity Creator Larian Studios, it puts you in the middle of Ferun's mind flayer attack more than a century after the events of its predecessor.
