Baldur's Gate 3's latest patch is causing performance issues

Larian dropped a surprise patch for Baldur's Gate 3 yesterday, but players are reporting performance issues, and in some cases, losing entire saves after the update. The 200mb patch was aimed at improving VRAM consumption on PC, optimizations on Mac and Steam decks, and stability and crash prevention on consoles. However, it seems to have caused some problems.

Many players across platforms have reported performance issues, with frames dropping significantly after the update. Some even saw their savings corrupted. While the update was intended to iron out some of the remaining issues, it seems that many players are starting to encounter issues that weren't there before.

“After the patch, my game progress (241 hours) is no longer playable,” said a post on the Steam Community Forum. “What an achievement, Larian. Now I have to check all my files again and again. I've played for 241 hours so far with only one crash, and the game has loaded every time without a problem.” Many other comments also mentioned that their saves are no longer accessible.

Elsewhere, players have been complaining about stuttering and sudden drops in frames. “The new hotfix reduced my constant 60-75 FPS experience to 18-25,” said another Steam forum post. “I'm sad. Act 1, nothing intense and only stirring medium settings.”

After making his mark on The Last of Us, Craig Mazin is focusing on a new take on Larian's beloved RPG.

Even on Reddit, fans have reported experiencing performance issues. “This is the first time since I bought this game that I've had poor performance. Yesterday I was achieving a crisp 60 fps with occasional dips to 45-50 when loading new areas,” said one player. “However now I'm getting 10 fps when standing still and dropping to 5 or less when walking.”

Hopefully, Larian will work towards resolving these issues as soon as possible. I can't imagine how it feels to lose an entire playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3.
