Todd Howard says Starfield's new Game Plus idea was misread by some players

Reflecting on this mechanic in a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Todd Howard opined that some players may have misunderstood Bethesda's broader design intent. “[The Unity] Did we ask you this weird, deep question that I think is lost on a lot of people,” the executive said. “It asks are you just this power gamer who wants to have everything, or are you willing to leave this world behind?” While the concept was thematically ambitious, the fact is that Starfield An action RPG where the number-go-up dopamine hits are an important motivator to keep going meaning that a large subset of players went through Unity without much thought.

Starfield's New Game Plus mode went through some big changes this month

StarfieldThe Free Lens update, which debuted on April 7, brought several changes to the way the game handles NG+. Among them is the option to upgrade Starburn powers using Quantum Essence, which essentially acts as an alternative to going through Unity. Another new addition is the Quantum Entanglement Device, which allows players to start a new game plus without permanently leaving their favorite gear and items, but rather to retrieve those assets after building the device upon reaching a new Atlantis lodge. Both additions reduce the thematic weight that makes up Starborn, but that compromise isn't unexpected given Bethesda's clear vision that the choice hasn't quite caught on with many audiences.
