Borderlands 4 has tons of weapons (several billion if you believe Gearbox's big marketing spiel), but a good Borderlands game is always defined by its fun weapons and the ones you grind. I still have very fond memories of turning up the volume on my TV and deeply annoying my brother by constantly using The Bane in Borderlands 2, a gun that screams when the trigger is held. Thankfully, he doesn't hate my guts.
That being said, although Borderlands 4 has a lot of silly weapons to play with, there aren't really any unique weapons that you get from side quests. This is a topic that was recently brought up on the Borderlands subreddit, as it seems that some players are feeling the lack of unique weapons awarded to players in this way.
Borderlands 4 fans are disappointed with the lack of unique weapons
One such player is Reddit user Metalsonic005, who thinks the lack of unique weapons as side quest rewards is one of the main reasons why many players sometimes feel a little lonely in the game's open world.
In Metalsonic005's post, they explain that Borderlands 4 doesn't have many incentives to seek out side quests given by NPCs, and that unique weapons like The Bane, Chulainn, and Swordsplosion with quest rewards in previous games were “big and different that encouraged you to play through the side later”. This is an opinion I agree with myself, as even if the weapons weren't useful, they usually had a gimmick that made them fun to earn as rewards.
Metalsonic005 is not alone in this opinion, as another user named Modification102 says that side quests “lost something” as a result of the removal of unique weapon rewards, while another user named Ab2dii agrees that they actually encourage doing side quests and how they “guaranteed to upgrade your game” to upgrade your game.
Another user named Borderlands_Boyo_314 called the decision to get rid of side quest rewards “pretty baffling,” while another named HorusKane420 pointed out how we were given the ability to replay missions in Borderlands 4, but not because people wanted it. This seems like a pretty glaring omission on Gearbox's part, and if we do get DLC at some point, here's hoping it includes fun unique weapons as quest rewards.
