The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a pillar in the RPG genre. In fact, many consider it one of the best games ever made. It's so popular that fans couldn't wait for CD Projekt Red's next title. Unfortunately, Cyberpunk 2077's disastrous launch left fans disappointed until it was finally fixed, along with the Phantom Liberty DLC.
If you ask anyone about it now, they'll say Cyberpunk 2077 is a great game with a great open world, but they'll probably pick Witcher 3 over it. However, sales figures tell an entirely different story. CDPR's dystopian future RPG sold more copies than its dark fantasy RPG did in the same time frame.
Cyberpunk 2077 sold 35 million copies much faster than Witcher 3
The studio announced that as of yesterday, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold 35 million copies since its December 2020 launch. While this is a huge achievement in itself, CFO Piotr Nielubowicz revealed in a recent earnings call that, “This is a better result than Witcher 3 which is the main source of our cyberpunk release timeframe.
The latter part of the statement is not too surprising. Long overdue with DLC, Cyberpunk 2077 saw a major overhaul in 2023 to fix all the issues the game was suffering from. This probably brought a huge wave of players who probably stopped playing the game due to its broken nature. Along with the launch for Switch 2, these factors certainly helped with the recent revenue for the studio.
Surprisingly, though, it reached the 35 million copies sales milestone faster than Witcher 3, especially with its reputation.
Ten years later, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt remains a pillar of fantasy games
I'm starting to look as old as Geralt.
The earnings call also revealed that development on the Cyberpunk sequel is in full swing, with 135 developers working on the project, and more coming soon. However, while most devs are busy focusing on The Witcher 4, 447 is currently working on it. This split suggests that the time gap between the two games cannot be as long as that between their prequels.
