Diablo 4 teases Chaos Armor's 'DNA' for Back to the Future
In the disclosure of Diablo 4 Season 11, Blizzard developers answered a common fan question head-on: “Is Chaos Armor coming back?” To begin with, class designer Charles Dunn made it clear that everyone from players to developers love Chaos Armor, but any potential return comes with a catch. “We're certainly committed to taking those learnings and applying them when making future updates,” Dunn said. “We're looking at the lessons learned from Chaos Armor and wondering where the best way to bring back that buildcrafting, that variety, that chess.”
Eventually, Don and the team remain aware of the problems around them Diablo 4 Chaos Armor is like this. Game designer Aislin Hall followed Don's statement, pointing out that “Chaos Armor was definitely designed as a seasonal mechanic first. It was very powerful, and intentionally so, because we knew it was going away after the season was over. If we just went, 'Really, it's going to stay,' there would be big problems.” Hall continued, “There's definitely a lot of wonderful things about it… We all really like it here. I think you'll see its DNA in the future.”
So it seems that if Chaos Armor players don't recognize it, it's good that Blizzard is aware and looking for ways to implement “its DNA” permanently. How this actually happens remains to be seen, although there are some possible solutions. One possible approach is to have more possible slot options for each item – it's the crafting that people really like. Diablo 4 Season 10, and it will address that, though it may run into some of the same powerful issues that Chaos Armor has. Blizzard can also change uniques so that players can move unique effects to different slots. Players want creative freedom with their builds, and it's easy to see how this sometimes conflicts with Blizzard's desire to keep some semblance of balance in the game.
One thing is certain: Chaos Armor will not be present when Diablo 4 Season 11 begins on December 11. Instead, Season 11 will focus on divine gifts and sanctification, with some controversial changes in the way of tempering and masterworking. After the success of Season 10, there is no doubt that Season 11 has a lot to live up to. Players weren't exactly thrilled with the Season 11 PTR back in October, but let's see how Blizzard's latest effort plays out.
