Japanese folklore inspired the four-armed form of Sukuna
Meet Ryomen Sukuna of Japanese Folklore
It's no secret that Gege Akutami draws inspiration from Japanese folklore, urban legends, and Buddhist mythology, from Death Painting Wombs to the names being used for the various domain extensions in the series. Ryomen Sukuna is no exception, as his four arms clearly pay homage to the legendary Ryomen Sukuna of Japanese folklore, who first appeared in the 65th year of Emperor Nintoku's reign in Hida Prefecture.
Much like the King of Curses himself, Ryomen Tsukuna has four arms. According to legend, he is described as an 18-meter tall figure with two faces, one at the front and one at the back, four legs with knees but no heels. His appearance alone suggested that he possessed incredible power, strong enough to allow him to rob people and defy the emperor's orders.
in Jujutsu KaisenTsukuna revels in chaos and the suffering of others, almost as if Gege Akutami plucked the legendary Ryomen Tsukuna from Japanese folklore and brought it into the series to wreak relentless havoc. These two people share many similarities, from their multiple limbs to their ruthless nature.
How Ryomen Sukuna got four hands through his twin
The first arc of Sukuna's Terror
Now that we know Sukuna's folklore roots, it's time to look at the cosmic reason why she has four arms. In the beginning, Sukuna was a human mage, born of a human mother and father, making him completely human in origin. No man is born with four hands, not even in the world Jujutsu KaisenSo Sukuna's extra organs must have been formed while she was still in her mother's womb.
Sukuna's mother also did not have a healthy pregnancy, as she suffered from severe starvation that also affected the unborn Sukuna and her twin brother.
To make matters worse, the twins inside Jujutsu Kaisen Considered a single entity, each twin limits the other's potential by simply existing. A classic example of this is the Mai and Maki genin, whose powers are naturally limited by their twin bond. Maki enjoyed the full power of her Heavenly Ban only after Mai sacrificed her life, thus correcting the imbalance caused by their relationship.
Whatever the era, you jujutsu magicians are pain.—Sukuna
Returning to Sukuna, he eventually ate his twin brother to survive, an act that likely bonded their bodies together. As a result, Sukuna did not have to deal with the problem of shared abilities, which enabled her to fully manifest her power. In other words, he basically consolidated all power in himself. While Gege Akutami never confirmed the exact reason why Sukuna gained the extra limbs, it is strongly implied that the unnatural circumstances of his birth, along with his cannibalism, contributed to his extra arms, eyes, and mouth.
Sukuna's four arms bring unmatched combat advantage
Sukuna's four-armed deadly edge
Sukuna is the only character Jujutsu Kaisen Four-handed, giving him an edge against other magicians who rely on two hands. He can perform hand seals with his extra weapons while fighting his opponent head-on, effectively casting powerful cursed techniques without interrupting his attacks and defenses. In short, he can remove cursed techniques in quick succession.
Additionally, Tsukuna can easily deal with multiple opponents at once, even if they are on the level of Yuji Itadori and Gozo Satoru. His additional weapons made it easier for him to defend and attack at the same time, a feat limited to two weapons for other mages.
Meanwhile, Sukuna's extra mouth also allows her to cast spells faster than anyone else. His extra body parts allow him to multitask in battle, always keeping him one step ahead of his foes. Dealing with offensive pressure is a walk in the park for someone like Sukuna, whose level of versatility is godlike.
