Eidos Montreal Announces Office, Studio Head's Departure

Eidos-Montreal, a longtime game studio best known for work on the Deus Ex franchise and its Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, has announced major layoffs.

In a statement shared on LinkedIn, it was revealed that 124 employees will be affected by layoffs. Additionally, studio head David Anfosi is also departing.

The statement is as follows:

“Edos Montreal is announcing reductions in its workforce and the departure of studio head David Anfosi.

Workforce reductions affecting 124 employees are the result of changing project requirements and impacts on production and support teams. Today is a difficult day for our studio and reflects the need to adapt and focus efforts where Eidos-Montréal can be most effective.

We are deeply grateful to the affected team members; This decision is not a reflection of their talent, dedication, or performance. Supporting those affected with care and respect remains our priority, while ensuring continuity for teams to move forward.

Also, after several years as head of the studio, David Anfosi and Eidos Montreal are also parting ways. We thank David for his contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavours. A transition plan is underway, and more updates will be shared once new leadership is finalized.

However, our priority today is to support our colleagues. “

This is the third round to hit the studio, with a round in December affecting senior staff and a round last March affecting 75 employees.

Battlefield 6 studios hit with layoffs despite record-breaking launch numbers

EA has reportedly fired an unconfirmed number of Battlefield 6 employees from multiple studios as part of a “reunion” across the franchise.

Eidos Montreal seems to struggle to get a project off the ground

Ever since the release of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021, Eidos Montreal seems to be struggling to land a long-term project. Since then, the studio has been outsourced to provide support for Grounded 2 and Fable.

Resumes made publicly available after the December layoffs indicate several canceled projects. Among the reported projects, the studio apparently tried to resurrect Deus Ex, pitching it to partners and publishers, though no one seemed to bite on the revival.

Separately, it was reported that a Lord of the Rings game was cancelled, which contained Telltale-style story elements. Of note, Insider Gaming reported that the “AAAA” game was in development using Unreal Engine 5. It's called P11, and it's a new IP that's been in development since 2019, with “hundreds of millions” of dollars invested.

It's unclear how much the layoffs announced Monday will affect the title.
