Why are indie games so popular at this year's Game Awards?
Many of the best games of 2025 were independent, and that's no coincidence
A quick look at many online gaming communities will reveal compelling arguments declaring that “AAA gaming is dead” and while this is slightly hyperbolic, it is rooted in real, observable changes within the games industry. For years, AAA was the only real way for the blockbuster gaming medium to express itself: game development was a very niche and impenetrable field before 2010. As it happens, the explosion of the indie scene happened at the same time that many AAA studios began alienating their audiences through practices like microtransactions, FOMO-driven live-service formulas, and general trend-chasing.
When Blockbuster Gaming began to face the worst forces of the free market and pursue a lack of increasingly ambitious but creative releases (eg. song, Fallout 76), indie games got to work on developing the medium. It's not too much of a stretch to say that many of the boldest and most influential gaming innovations of the past decade have come from the indie scene: games like Disco Elysium and Kentucky root zero High art was offered to consumers burnt to cheap, reproducible experiences, while pleasing The binding of Isaac, Hollow Knightand Cuphead It proved that games don't need to follow mainstream genres to be successful.
This brings us to 2025, where three of the six Game of the Year nominees are either independently published or published by small, indie labels. What's more, all three of these games have excellent chances to win Game of the Year – dispel the notion that any of these could be performative or “sympathetic” nominations.
