GameStop employees dread doing business any day

Earlier this week, GameStop managed to fix all of its employees at once by announcing a big “Trade Anything” day next month on December 6, which will allow customers to bring in a random item and receive $5 in store credit in exchange. In theory, this seems like a pretty neat idea, but in the real world, GameStop employees are thinking about what will be the worst day of their careers.

GameStop has just revealed its Black Friday deals, and it's like the Xbox doesn't exist

There are plenty on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, though.

GameStop has made it clear that not all items will be accepted as part of this plan, including biohazards, weapons, drugs, sexual objects, electronics that can hold personal information, and more. Even GameStop employees have been told that they make the final call on whether or not an item can be traded in, but we all know for a fact that warnings haven't stopped the public from being fooled before.

Across America, GameStop employees are sharing their thoughts on the plan, and understandably, many of them are negative. A GameStop employee going on the Wintertrainride (thanks Polygon) recently posted a TikTok explaining the reaction to the “Trade Anything” event, first dropping the bombshell that the public was alerted to the event before GameStop employees had to catch people.

Wintertrainride then claims that managers throughout his district began receiving calls from people asking what the limits were on the items they could bring, and asking if they could film the reactions of employees who were made to deal with their attempted trade-ins. They also claim that when concerns were raised with GameStop high-ups, employees were encouraged to call 911 if they felt unsafe, and to wear masks and gloves to handle potential biohazards if they were uncomfortable filming.

“I believe that anyone who works in a retail environment should not be asked by a company to come to work prepared to encounter biohazards, prepared to call 911, or prepared to conceal their identity from an attack by filming customers.”

Even GameStop employees aren't too thrilled about the plan on the company's subreddit, with a user named PossibilityOk21 saying in a post titled “God Help Us” that they're “unprepared” for the day they'll have to “handle some shit.” Another user called MrSmall85 describes it as “one of the craziest things to look after employees at the store level”, and another called Taemin_Tea who describes the day as simply “going to be a nuisance”.

There have been attempts to put a positive spin on the promotion, with some saying they will drive to trade in canned goods and school supplies, since all proceeds go to charity, but there seems to be a growing sense of fear and despair throughout the day. If you're planning on trading something weird, maybe get a can of soup out of your cupboard or something, and help make the lives of some low-paid retail workers a little less stressful.
