Goku and Vegeta's Evolutions of Super Saiyan Blue, explained

Key takeaways

  • Goku's Super Saiyan Blue with Kaiokane combines the two techniques, greatly increasing his power but straining his energy and stamina levels.
  • Vegeta's Super Saiyan Blue Evolved is a new transformation, visually different and stronger than regular Super Saiyan Blue.
  • Both forms were used in the Tournament of Power, with Goku's Kaioken x20 still falling short of Jiren's, while Vegeta surpassed his limit to defeat Toppo.

Dragon Ball Super Showed the characters to be stronger than they have been in the past, mostly due to the new transformations they were able to unlock with the introduction of God. Because of this new energy, Goku and Vegeta can now transform into Super Saiyan Gods and tap into greater power than before. Eventually, they overcame their limits and unlocked that above form; Super Saiyan Blue.

For the most part, Super Saiyan Blue became the default transformation for the two Saiyans after the events of the Resurrection F arc. Dragon Ball Super. However, the Tournament of Power saw them both become even stronger with their blue transformations, albeit in very different ways. So, let's take a look at these unique evolutions of Super Saiyan Blue and learn about their characteristics, powers and see which one was the strongest.

Universe 6 Arc

While this isn't technically a new transformation on top of regular Super Saiyan Blue, it's a favorite way for Goku to further increase in power. Instead of powering up to realize a stage beyond Super Saiyan Blue, Goku reinforces his body and strength to reach that stage with the Kaioken, becoming much stronger and stronger than he was before.

Due to this state being a fusion of two different power-ups, Goku's Super Saiyan Blue takes on a red color and his regular blue Ki has another, larger red Ki. Due to the use of two extremely taxing techniques, the strain they take on Goku's energy and stamina levels is immense, as the combination is explained to have a 10% chance of working and a 90% chance of failure, in which case Goku would die.

Oh… it's a Kaioken attack. It's like a huge surge of energy. Everything is enhanced: strength, speed, hearing and even vision improve dramatically.

Kaioken's first use of Super Saiyan Blue came in the Universe 6 arc when Goku fought Hit. Early on, the Saiyans were repeatedly defeated by the legendary assassin's time-manipulating powers. To make up for the difference in power, Goku unleashed the Kaioken power-up on top of Super Saiyan Blue, adding a 10x multiplier to his overall power, allowing him to overcome Hit's timeskip. It was initially explained that Goku was saving the technique for the final match against Beerus but then felt the need to use it.

Goku again used a combination of his two powerful states in his battle against Zamasu in the Goku Black Arc. However, it wasn't until the Tournament of Power that Goku would surpass his abilities by using the Kaioken x20 in his heated battle with Jiren. However, even though the power-up was incredible and gifted Goku with great strength and speed, it was still below Jiren's level, although it was still used to great effect against other fighters.

Tournament of Power Arc

Unlike Goku's Super Saiyan Blue with Kaiokane, Super Saiyan Blue Evolved is a brand new transformation that is unique to Vegeta. It does not add a technique that multiplies his form's innate power, rather, it is an entirely new form that is much stronger than Super Saiyan Blue, giving Vegeta a unique color and aura that makes him even stronger than Goku's blue state with Kaiokane. However the difference between them is negligible.

The change from Super Saiyan Blue can be seen very clearly. In this form, Vegeta grows larger and has larger and more pronounced muscles, though his hair takes on a darker shade of blue with his aura taking on a brighter color with glowing particles around him. Essentially, this form acts as a significant power-up to regular Super Saiyan Blue, such as Super Saiyan Grade 2, with spikier hair and an increase in overall power.

I will shatter my limits! My own way! On my own terms!

The transformation was originally born out of frustration at the start of Goku and Vegeta's combined attack on Jiren. After watching Goku achieve new heights with Ultra Instinct Omen, failing to realize himself, and easily losing his previous confrontation against Universe 11's strongest, Vegeta dug deep within himself and pushed his limits, unlocking a transformation like never before. Unique only to him, but it was a better choice compared to Goku's Kaioken x20 power-up due to it being more durable.

However, like Goku's increased power, it was still no match for Jiren, who was able to stop both fighters. Even so, though, it was an extraordinary asset to Universe 7 when Toppo unlocked his God of Destruction abilities, defeating even the Destroyer in an epic battle. Super. This was incredibly important to Vegeta as a character as it showed him using his powers to defeat a candidate for the position of God of Destruction.
