Grand Theft Auto 6 won two awards at the Golden Joystick Awards yesterday, even though it won't be out for another year. To little surprise, it was named Most Wanted Game, and also took home the award for Best Trailer.
The long delay is claimed to have helped preserve the “cyberpunk landscape”, but in winning the Most Wanted award, GTA 6 is closely tied to Cyberpunk 2077. That's because CD Projekt Red's RPG was also a two-time winner of the Most Wanted Game at Golden Joist.
Only three games have won the Most Wanted at the Golden Joystick Awards twice in a row, and now, GTA 6 is one of them.
Looking back through previous wins, we can see that games almost never win the Most Wanted Game (or One to See, as it's sometimes called) twice in a row. But three titans of industry hype are winning consistently right now: GTA 6, Cyberpunk 2077, and The Witcher 3.
This will sting for fans, because we've actually been playing GTA 6 by now, but it was pretty much the same for Cyberpunk. That just got slower and delayed until launching in a subpar state in 2020, finally fixed through updates. Long-suffering fans will be hoping that GTA 6 doesn't launch in the same situation, but Rockstar is known to be a perfectionist to a fault, so I doubt we need to worry about that here.
Now, since I spent a little time today looking at previous Golden Joystick Award wins, here are every winner of the Most Wanted Award since the category's inception in 2003.

While it's easy to roll our eyes at even existing in this category, since it's awarding games we actually play, it's interesting to see where the hype train has stopped over the years. We can also see that being a two-time winner means more pressure on the developer to deliver, and meet some higher expectations.
If all goes according to plan, we'll be playing GTA 6 this time next year. If not, the game could be a triple winner of the award for the first time. Or maybe if it gets to that point, everyone will just vote for something else.
