Hollow Knight's PS5 upgrade may have patched an important glitch

As gamers, we are all well aware of the update patch that manages to make the game worse instead of better. No game is more emblematic than Monster Hunter Wilds, where every new patch seems to have a negative effect in order to do something positive.

However, have you ever heard of a patch that suddenly makes an already notoriously difficult game more difficult? Because that's what happened to the original Hollow Knight after the free PlayStation 5 upgrade.

For years, Hollow Knight had an “unbeatable” flaw that went unpatched. This made the game much easier, and took the platinum trophy from “impossible” to “most possible”. However, with the update 1.03 patch, according to many users, this seems to be gone now.

“Good thing I was able to get platinum with the glitch before this,” wrote one user. “Just the thought of fighting that god awful idea with Marcoth is enough to give me an aneurysm.”

Why Hollow Knight: Silksong wasn't the game I wanted it to be after all the hype

I found that I didn't need to play Hollow Knight: Silksong to fall in love with its world and characters.

Where things get particularly ridiculous is the self-described difficulty rating moving from a 9 to a full 10, as more and more people discover that the error no longer exists.

For what it's worth, at least two people have already gotten PS5 Platinum since it went live. As phenomenal as this is, especially considering that, unlike some PS4 to PS5 upgrades, there is no auto-pop.

Jokes aside, the team wasn't against Cherry Glitch, at least as far as we know

As far as we know, Team Cherry was also aware of what was going on and let it pass. It's unclear why this is exactly, but it may have something to do with speedrunners.

That said, Team Cherry has often been one to stand behind its notoriously difficult products. In a book published after Silksong's long-awaited release, developer Ari Gibson explained some of the reasoning behind things.

“Silksong has had some difficult moments – but allowing a high level of freedom in the world means you always have choices about where you're going and what you're doing.”

Still, after facing some harsh criticism, some changes were eventually brought into the fold, including nerfing the Flea Dodge minigame. Another patch dealt with environmental threats, making things more equal than letting the patch boot.

As it stands, it's unclear whether that invincibility glitch was patched out on purpose or by accident and whether it will return. Some players are trying to reverse patch their game or looking for a physical copy to play the unpatched version. We wish them all the best.
