If you can't find a Pokemon on the mini-map, you need to open your Pokédex and then hover the cursor over the Pokemon you want to find. Next, press the + button on the right Joy-Con and select Yes. After doing so, if you talk to any other Pokemon, they'll ask if you're looking for someone, and choosing yes again will force them to turn and face the direction of the Pokemon you're looking for, usually. Walking in a straight line in that direction will take you straight to them, though you can always stop and ask other Pokemon as you begin to approach if you're having trouble locating them.

Sometimes, the Pokemon you're looking for has temporarily left the area, in which case, you'll need to go to their home and use some Honey, which can be found in flower patches. If you can't remember where a Pokemon's home is, that's okay, you can use the search function once again. This time, however, the Pokemon you ask will point you home instead of the missing Pokemon's current location. It's worth noting, though, that you'll only be able to find a Pokemon (or its home) if you're in an area where it lives.

The search function can be incredibly useful during crafting projects when you need a Pokemon with a specific skill. You may also need it to find Slowpoke during the mission to rebuild the Wasteland Pokemon Center, as it tends to get out of the way in the part where you have to clear your way back to Professor Tangrowth.
