I'm already mourning Phasmophobia's March 3rd update

It is November 2024. An old friend of mine contacted me and asked me to download it Phasmophobia So we can play it together. Of course, I had already heard about the game Phasmophobia It's been in early access since 2020, but it recently came to consoles in October. We didn't really have a game to play together Apex LegendsSo I downloaded the game, and watched the reunion in the following weeks the boys (Not to be confused with the comic series).

My high school friends and I had a new game to play, and because of that, it will easily become my most played game of 2025. It has a good chance of being my most played game for the year (or at least I don't see it falling out of the top 10). We spent weeks getting good at the game, with most of us having a couple of levels of prestige under our belts. Each cooperative Phasmophobia The session is full of incredibly dumb antics. We went from playing every night around dinner for a week to playing twice a week now, where we play once a week. It's only natural, given the sheer number of hours we've put into the game, and now, Phasmophobia's 6 Tanglewood Drive remake releases on March 3. I've welcomed every map rework that's followed lately, but it hurts.

Why phasmophobia is reworking Tanglewood

Developer Kinetic Games has given a few looks at the map and outlined its goals/why it's reworking Tanglewood. It aims to bring the visuals and gameplay of Tanglewood, making it comparable recently Phasmophobia Maps and reworks, increase the replay value of maps, and align with the studio's vision for a future full release of the game. Part of this effort is to eliminate the various stock assets in the game, which is understandable. On paper, I totally understand why Kinetic Games is reworking Tanglewood, but on paper, Kinetic Games has always been known to upset parts of this fanbase.

Along with announcing the release date for Tanglewood's remake, Kinetic Games reiterated that:

“We knew when we announced that 6 Tanglewood Drive was getting a makeover, it would be a hot topic among the community due to its popularity and the place it holds in players' hearts. After working on this new version, we believe we've only improved on what makes the map special.”

This message is directly for me, and players like me, or especially those who have been playing longer than me. And while I understand the desire and need to fix it, I don't think changing the map can “fix” what makes it special. Tanglewood is special not because of its specific framing, but because my friends and I spent weeks on the map honing our skills in the game, because we know that map like the back of our hands, and because it's a warm-up map for any session. Phasmophobia. It could still happen and I'm trying to reserve judgment, but you can't make Tanglewood special.

If there is a range of possibilities where players can keep/access the old tanglewood and the new tanglewood, I think this is the easiest solution. At the very least, I hope old Tanglewood comes back a few times throughout the year.

The reworking of Tanglewood looks good, but it doesn't look like Tanglewood

If you told me the released images of the new Tanglewood were a completely different map, I would believe you. The front of the house is largely the same, but the hallway looks completely different, the living room looks like it's from a completely different era, the looping spot in the kitchen is gone, and the van (which has pissed me off for years when the ghost starts knocking) has been replaced by a completely different car. I don't even know of a nursery that saves from A Phasmophobia Ghost hundreds of times since I first started playing.

At first glance, PhasmophobiaThe changes at Tanglewood don't align with me. Maybe when it's released, I'll feel differently – I was on board PhasmophobiaThe other map reworks since their announcement — but the changes are much bigger than I expected when it was first mentioned.

Kinetic Games says they tried to “keep the original design of the house as familiar as possible”, so there aren't any drastic layout changes (outside of the kitchen), and “the redesign has given 6 Tanglewood Drive a much richer personality through new interactions and landmarks that players will notice within their first steps.”

Kinetic Games also says it has a host of new audio features Phasmophobia For Tanglewood and there are still “best places” in Tanglewood to loop ghosts. Apparently, there's also a dryer jingle. The expanded audio features make a lot of sense to me, as well as adding brand new interactions, but only… the new Tanglewood is not the old Tanglewood.

So, I'm firmly on the side of the fanbase that Kinetic Games knew would be disappointed by the big changes at Tanglewood. I get it, but I don't like it. But when the Tanglewood remake drops, I have no doubt my friends and I will check it out. I don't know if it will capture the same magic. We have, of course, talked about it from the teasers released so far, and we run the full gamut of ideas. I am, perhaps, on the extreme end of not liking it, while the other friend is on the extreme end of being open to it. Others are somewhere in between, and represent how important, if anything, the way our pendulum swings. noose It's like a game for us. We all want what is good because we love it so much.

Kinetic Games says “Trust” and while I'm hesitant about it right away, I choose to believe that's what makes Tanglewood special. I just know I'm going to miss the old Tanglewood, as much as I like or dislike the new Tanglewood. I can also guarantee that I will be spending a lot of time at Tanglewood until March 3rd.
