Millennial burnout kills anime star

Season 1, Episode 1, “First Stroke,” introduces viewers to Natsuko Hirose (JP: Anna Nagase, EN: Madeleine Morris), a mysterious anime prodigy whose career explodes after high school graduation. Fresh from directing the Magical Girl series, the rising star tries his hand at directing a romantic film. Unfortunately, the movie is way behind schedule.

A dull office atmosphere brings writer's block to life

Gensu's first act captures the heroes' creative crisis well. The image of the young animator, hunched over his desk, hair disheveled by lack of self-care, is all too familiar to any creative. Heros struggles under the burden of her perfectionism. Trapped in a shoebox-sized cubicle, she tore through the pages of her unfinished storyboard. A powerful executive examines Hero's work, their cheerful attitude hides money in their minds. Rumors of gossip indicate that the fate of the movie is rocky.

Surprisingly, this workplace scene carries the most tension despite the epic battle scene later in the episode. Viewers get a close-up view of Heroes' spiral in delay. As heroes watch her phone, each social media comment increases the pressure to churn out a successful product, from fans who swear by her work to those who want to save her life to trolls.

Hero's demanding nature breeds resentment among his colleagues. A subordinate passes key frames only for the teaser of the film to completely re-request the heroes. When a colleague berates Hirose's stubborn self-reliance, she cowers in her office chair, glaring at him like Sadaka Yamamura (she refuses to cut her hair until she's done storyboarding, which adds to the annoying effect).

An unexplained food poisoning leaves questions

Hiro's composure quickly changes upon learning of the death of industry titan Kamataro Tsuruyama via food poisoning (a heavy-handed foreshadowing of things to come). After recovering from the shock, she eats her bento box lunch while re-watching Tsuruyama's cult classic film. A story of destruction. Unfortunately, she is unaware that she inadvertently swallowed the destroyed clams.

The malaise of the workplace suddenly broke as the heroes fell to the ground. A small crowd surrounds him, including a panicked executive, as the burned artist falls unconscious. In the final shot of Act 1, Hero's strained eyes roll coldly into the back of his head.

Hero's death is not clearly confirmed, so it's hard to believe that Clam walked in on him. Whatever her fate, she sees her life before her eyes like a cell on peg bars. Another sequence shows her as a child holding popcorn while the heroes look on A story of to perishTragic events unfold. Suddenly, she wakes up in a desert of ruins.

Every New Isekai Anime Announced for 2025 (So Far)

Isekai anime is inexhaustible, with each season consisting of a few shows. Here are the 2025 isekai anime series announced so far.

We've seen this before, and so has Natsuko Hirose

In the second act of episode 1, Hirose is reincarnated into the world of one of her favorite movies. A story of destruction. However, as he meets his favorite characters, his instincts remind him of the impending danger of the film. She warns the heroes of the Last City of this danger. Ultimately, it's up to the heroes to become the hero of their own story.

Waiting for the inevitable is boring

After succumbing to poison from an expired bento box clam, the heroes wake up in a desert strewn with ruined ancient buildings. However, his initial illusion is interrupted by an evil giant insect-like monster called Zero. Fortunately, a brave handsome boy knight, Luke Braveheart (JP: Kazuki Ura, EN: Ryan Negron), comes to her rescue and kills the beast.

The following story beats are very predictable. Hirose Isekai goes through specific stages of disbelief. First, she suspects that she is at an anime con with expert cosplayers. Then, the heroes enter the last city, the last refuge of civilization not destroyed by the Void. After a witness The Story of Parising Scenes shot-for-shot, the heroine feels that she is literally inside the world of the film. Then, the other shoe drops.

The heroes recall a tragic scene A story of destruction In which an army of void monsters attack the final city. As the city wins the war, it costs the life of the lovable unicorn mascot character Unio (JP: Rie Kugimiya, EN: Luci Christian). Unio's death sends Lord Braveheart into a spiral of despair, setting the stage for tragic consequences to come.

Hirose can't let Unio die. The devoted fan immediately pleads with Braveheart, Unio and others to heed his warning, but his concerns fall on indifferent ears. (Thanks to Nagase and Morris for their dynamic portrayal of the heroes. They capture the animator's nostalgic cynicism and nerdy enthusiasm in equal parts. Their performances help flesh out a character whose face is often hidden throughout the episode.)

It's disappointing to see Heroes being ignored despite his anime cred. However, it is also very slow. We saw the type of dark fantasy show Hirose fell into Groundhog Day The formula played first. However, we are yet to see Zenshu's 'it factor'.

A new strong cast invigorates the third act

Everything plays as expected. The Zero Army arrives, the heroes take to the battlefield, and Unio orders Braveheart to retreat so he can sacrifice himself. Heroes watch the tragedy play out in despair and terror, powerless to change anything. Suddenly, his peg bar speaks to him from inside his hoodie pocket:

Natsu's! A new destiny must be forged.

The call to action pushes Natsu's heroes into action, and that's when the real fun begins. She runs onto the battlefield, pulls out her peg bar, and enters a charming magical girl sequence. She legendarily flies through her projectile office chair into a makeshift desk. Once seated, the talented animator sketches at lightning speed, and the audience sees the creator's face for the first time. A vital pencil-drawn monster emerges, obliterating a wave of nothingness in an explosion of paper. The day, and Unio, is saved!

The final act of Zenshu episode 1 shows what makes anime interesting. Iron-clad knights, buff mayors, magical unicorns, and anthropomorphic animals are fine, but the real hero is an artist's imagination. Now that Hirose's powers have been awakened, viewers can eagerly anticipate what she will do next in Episode 2.
