Is Il-Nam Squid the father of the front man in the game?
Breaking the principle
The reason many fans theorize that Il-nam may actually be In-ho's (the front man) father comes from a few different scenes in Season 1 and Season 2. After Season 2 was released in December 2024, fans began to tear up. This theory was based on what they knew about the two characters together.
In season 1, there is a scene between Gi-hoon and Il-nam, who become close at games, where they are choosing between regular milk and chocolate milk. Gi-hoon opts for chocolate milk, and Il-nam tells him:
As a kid I'm willing to bet you spanked a lot…my son did too. He was just like you, mate.
In a scene from Season 2, In-ho, also known as Front Man, has some plain milk and decides to give it to Joon-hee instead. He tells her that he doesn't drink plain milk, which leads many to link this scene to the relationship between Gi-hoon and Il-nam. While the original theory for this connection contained mistranslations of the captions, the correct translations could still indicate the possibility that Il-Nam could be related to the front man.
Is this theory practical?
Can it actually be applied to fiction?
-
Both In-ho and Il-nam's son are implied to dislike milk.
-
Both of them are very active in the game.
While the original theory led fans to believe that Il-nam's son and front man were both lactose intolerant, an accurate translation could still indicate a connection. The front man, or In-ho, essentially implies that he just doesn't like milk, which Il-nam calls Gi-hoon. Il-Nam indicates that his son usually chose chocolate milk over regular milk, which often got him into trouble. While the actual explanation makes this theory less likely, it is still something that can be applied to the story and appear in Season 3.
This theory may also be more due to the fact that Il-nam was the game's original creator and after In-ho won in 2015, he became the front man, which has already connected the two. It's possible that, since In-ho had a difficult life before joining the Games, struggling to protect his wife, he didn't know that Il-nam was actually his father. Even though Il-nam was not his father, perhaps In-ho felt a special bond with him, as he gave In-ho a chance to save his wife by entering the games and winning profits. Then, upon winning, he decided to continue the legacy of the games as front man, especially since his wife did not survive him.

A possible connection between Gi-hoon and Il-nam

His dislike of milk indicates that Gi-hoon may be Il-nam's son
There are other theories involving Il-Nam as well, including the possibility that she might be Gi-hoon's father instead. While Gi-hoon's father is never mentioned in the show, much like the front man, many have put together a few moments that could hint at the possibility.
In particular, some fans have analyzed the same scene from season 1 involving milk. Since Il-nam mentioned that Gi-hoon was like his son, who was also beaten for not liking plain milk, many theorized that this could indicate that Il-nam is actually Gi-hoon's father rather than the front man. Later in the first season, they both realize they are from the same area and grew up playing the same children's game.
Although this theory is also plausible, it is possible Not as strong As for the other, due to the fact that Gi-hoon will probably remember what his father looked like if he's around to beat him up. Both theories have interesting origins and prove that fans are always on the lookout for little Easter eggs and implications, even if the chances of the theories proving true are pretty slim. However, there is still a possibility that this may come true in Season 3 when it is released later in 2025.
