The Rinnegan belongs to the three greatest dojutsu in the Naruto world. Early on in the Naruto series, fans were introduced to two dojutsu, the Byakugan and the Sharingan. The Byakugan of the Hyuuga clan apparently originated from Kaguya Otsutsuki and was then passed down to Hamura, who passed it on to the Hyuuga, his direct descendants.
The Byakugan granted its users great powers, such as X-ray vision and the ability to see miles ahead. More than that, the Byakugan can easily see one's body's chakra circulatory system and on top of that, there is only one blind spot behind their spine. Now, however, the Rinnegan doesn't even exist among the shinobi type, and even when it did, it was a very cheap imitation of what it should actually be like. Needless to say, the Boruto series ruined the Rinnegan forever, and it will probably never be the same again. Fans can only hope that Kishimoto somehow goes on to redeem this eye later down the line, but the chances of that happening are very low.
