Some friends are difficult to hire, while others may have stories and interactions that resonate with a wider audience. After all, there will always be some winners and losers, even if you're one of those players who tries to change things up with each playthrough.

Hirelings
They are basically blank canvases
Well, it's no surprise that the characters you hire by talking to Withers are the least picked characters for the party. They don't have strong personalities and interesting backgrounds; They are just husks working for Withers who will accept whatever you say without approving or disapproving. This is definitely the solution if you've somehow created a character so evil and heinous that literally all the original characters have either died by your hand or left your horrible company.
There are also some special ways to use these hirelings, especially in Honor mode. It's not uncommon for some strategists to employ something called a camp alchemist, whose only job is to craft potions for your party. Other than that, there's almost no reason to use hirelings, unless you're one of those players who doesn't want to compromise the original characters and their lore. But why not? Missing you badly.
Minsc
He is introduced very late in the game
For those already familiar Baldur's Gate Games, as well as general D&D Lore, Minsc was a good callback character. He is introduced in the third act Baldur's Gate 3 During one of Jaheira's quests that sends you to investigate the infamous Stone God. After freeing Minsc from absolute control, he can be sent to your camp and used as a companion.

Baldur's Gate 3 introduced some nice race options, but these mods greatly expand the races available to choose from when creating your perfect Tav.
Unfortunately, Minsc was introduced a bit late in the game. While his character concept is pretty fun and he's a nice, old addition to anyone familiar with the franchise, we don't get that much time with him. It feels even more limiting because once you enter Act 3, the previous Acts are closed, and you can no longer go to those areas with him.

She only becomes available at the end of Act 2
Zahira will be very familiar to many Baldur's Gate Fans when she was first guarding the Last Light Inn. Unfortunately, if you're playing a selfish, evil character, you probably won't be able to get him on your side, but most players will still have him as a major NPC in Act 2. Although you meet him in this place, you won't actually unlock him as a companion until you deal with Ketheric and Moonrise Towers, so he only really becomes playable in early Component 3.
As a druid, she's incredibly powerful and useful, but she's directly competing for that spot with Halsin, who you can take as part of your party in Act 1 if you finish the quest with Druid Grove fairly quickly. If you're playing on high difficulty, it's also possible to unfortunately lose her in the Moonrise Tower battle, which could all contribute to her not having her in Act 3. It's a shame, because scripturally, she's a great choice to take with you through town.
Mynthara
Most people may not know that she can join you
Minthara is famous as the classic main antagonist in Act 1 when you are trying to help the thieves and the inhabitants of Druid Grove. You find him in a goblin camp, and he either insists you join him against Grove or is destroyed by his hands after abandoning the place. Not a good introduction, to say the least! That said, you don't really need to kill him here (or go against the entire grove if you want to have him as an ally).

The classes in Baldur's Gate 3 are great for D&D fans, but the modding community is hard at work, making them better and offering more options.
If you reduce her health enough and then knock her unconscious with a non-lethal final blow, the quest will still complete and you've dealt with the goblin camp leaders. Later, you can find her in the Moonrise Tower in Act 2 and rescue her. She will appear at the camp, and from there, you can have her as a companion throughout Act 2 and Act 3. That said, Minthara is a fellow who doesn't like goody-two-shoes, drow and all, so you'll have to cultivate a certain cutthroat playstyle to please her. He is also a very powerful companion, starting as a Paladin, which is one of the best classes in the entire game. Given how hard she is to get, though, and how the game doesn't exactly telegraph you, it's no wonder that many players never have her in their party.
Wyll
A little bland compared to other original characters
Now, onto the most woefully underrated character, Wyll. He is an original character and is initially available in Act 1 when you enter the Druid Grove. Pursuing a warlock Karlach, he is the ultimate good-guy hero caught in a hostile pact with a Cambian named Mizora. Wyll's character is one that has undergone some major rewrites, and even a VA change, and fans find him quite vulnerable to this day due to how shallow his character is. With all the challenges he's overcome, you'd really expect Wyll to have an intense personality and not be so rigid in his beliefs. Right now, he comes across as more of a paladin than a warlock with a blade, and for that reason, many tend to leave him in the camp sadly.
It's a shame really, because he has some of the most interesting quest lines in the entire game that can literally change the player's entire future based on their choices. His quest also has a deep connection to the main story Baldur's Gate 3 Because of his father and his lineage, and that can't be said for many other popular characters, like Astarion, for example. Because of that, some speculate and argue that he might be the secret protagonist of the game.
