The last season of Jujutsu Kaisen Saw the re-emergence of the Split Soul Katana. This cursed device was featured in the second season of the anime. What exactly makes this weapon so strong? Is this really the secret behind Maki's new powers?
Cursed tools are powerful tools in the Jujutsu Kaisen world. They are weapons that are imbued with cursed energy, allowing their users to fight against cursed spirits, even if they do not possess cursed energy. How much of an impact has Split Soul Katana had on the series so far?
What is a Split Soul Katana?
The Split Soul Katana is a powerful cursed weapon used by Toji Fushiguro and Maki Genin. As the name suggests, the katana allows its wielder to cut directly into someone's soul while simultaneously ignoring physical resistances. It was first introduced in the anime in season 2, episode 3. Where Toji used it against Geto and Gojo.
Toji also used a katana to cut down the Rainbow Dragon, which was considered one of the strongest curses of the ghetto at the time. After Toji's death, Katana's whereabouts were never confirmed. But it was probably stored in the Janine Clan's armory.
Maki's katana is not like Toji's
In Season 3, Episode 4, Maki visits the Janine Clan's secret weapons cache. But upon arrival, she meets her father, who announces that he has emptied the storage, making it impossible for Maki to get her hands on the original Split Soul Katana. After the father's attack, Maki and Mai are left for dead. Realizing the situation, Mai uses her cursed technique to create a replica of the Split Soul Katana and gives her life in return.
Maki goes on to use the Split Soul Katana along with Juzo Kumiya's masterpiece: “Dragon Bone” to end the genin clan. She not only breaks off her father's head in one strike but also defeats the entire Kukuru unit.
Is the Split Soul Katana responsible for Maki's new powers?
It is true that the Split Soul Katana greatly enhanced Maki's fighting ability, but it is not the only reason for his increased power. Mai's death removed all the cursed energy shared between the twins. In return, Maki's physically strong body was raised to a level comparable to Toji's.

What about the split soul katana?
Maki will continue to use katana in the calling game. Notably, she would use it against Naoya's cursed spirit during the events at Sakurajima Colony. Initially, Maki struggles to seriously damage Naoya as she cannot use the katana to its full potential. In the nick of time, Hagane Daido appeared, looking for the katana. He immediately wields the Split Soul Katana, and his sheer skill allows him to slash Naoya.
When Maki returns from her training with Rokuzushi Mio, she is finally able to skillfully wield the katana and effortlessly kills Naoya. The katana also serves as the last means of communication between Maki and Mai, therefore holding great emotional value in the series.

Maki genin and Toji Fushiguro, the black sheep of the genin clan, sure know how to mess up, but who is stronger?
The Split Soul Katana is one of the iconic weapons featured in the anime. While its presence in the anime is only minimal, it still holds an important place in fans' hearts because it is directly linked to two integral characters, Toji and Maki.
