Several Internet providers and services, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, are experiencing major service outages in parts of the US. Although companies such as Verizon have issued statements about the ongoing situation, the outage also affects services operated by other companies.
Problems with the down detector were first reported just before noon easterly on Wednesday, January 14. As of 12:41 PM Eastern, 175,658 users reported problems with Verizon's mobile services, including 485 separate reports for FIOS, Verizon's home fiber internet service arm. On a similar scale, both AT&T and T-Mobile reported 1,800 outages nationwide. Affected users saw their mobile phones' 4G and 5G signals change to SOS-only mode, which could prevent calls and texts from being sent normally.
As of this writing, the outage is affecting customers in the US. Verizon released a statement on social media saying it was aware of the issue and its engineering teams were working to restore service as soon as possible. T-Mobile said that, when its services return to normal, customers trying to call or text Verizon users may not be able to reach them. AT&T and Xfinity have yet to publicly comment on the issue.
This is a developing news story. This post will be updated as soon as all functionality is restored to all affected providers.
