MindsEye was one of the worst-reviewed games of 2025, with critics slamming developer Build a Rocket Boy for releasing the game in an unfinished state. Aside from the obvious rush to release MindsEye, players also took issue with the formulaic missions, unique combat, and empty open world.
The period following the game's release was strange, with the co-CEO of Build a Rocky Boy claiming that a third party had funded a smear campaign against the game, while employees who quit their jobs issued an open letter criticizing studio leadership for creating a toxic culture.
With all the negative reception MindsEye has received, and all the consequences of the game's release for the studio, you'd think the remnants of Build a Rocket Boy would accept the game's failure and move on to its next project. Anyway, that didn't happen. Build a Rocket Boy continues to update MindsEye, transforming the failed open-world title into a pseudo-sandbox title with user-generated content.

However, an even stranger move from the developer is that it is still funding sponsored content for MindsEye (good place, FRVR). The game averages single-digit players on Steam, a hole that very few games have climbed out of. Despite this, content creator and streamer Kriken recently streamed MindsEye and released a YouTube video on his second channel that revealed the MindsEye sponsorship.
“Sponsored by MindsEye! Go to your favorite gaming platform and search for MindsEye to start playing now…. #MindsEyePartner” reads the description of the video.
The comments on the video are funny, highlighting Kriken's sponsorship by a functionally dead game: “Morbius Tear sponsorship, I love it,” writes ClairEff, comparing MindsEye to the widely panned Morbius (2022). “I can't believe it's real, imagine getting a Concord sponsorship, this is history we're seeing live now,” commented Smexy_Mudkip974.
MindsEye creator “never decided what game he wanted to make” and “laughed off” concerns leading to disastrous launch
According to a new report, “there was no coherent direction”.
It's a shocking financial decision from a studio that recently laid off 250 developers. That being said, Build A Rocket Boy likely has so few employees left that it has no choice but to try to improve MindsEye, as the studio may now lack the resources to fund another project.
90 of those fired are currently suing the studio for misusing its redundancy process. The case is being handled by the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB), the union of affected employees.
