Initially, NPCs will treat you badly, as you are nothing more than a nuisance to them, but later, they will fear and avoid you based on your story choices and skills. Each NPC has their own daily routine, and can be interacted with in some way. Everything we've seen so far indicates that the remake aims to continue this, with NPCs being a key driver of what makes Penal Colony so interesting.

It should be noted that Gothic 1 Remake Takes place in a dark, violent, and outwardly misogynistic setting, and the developers have no plans to change this fact for the remake, although the female characters will be more developed than they were in the original game.
