Pokemon airs 30th anniversary ad during Super Bowl

It's a simple question that's been around for 30 years, and it appears to be at the center of Pokemon's year-long celebration of its 30th anniversary — “What's your favorite?”

As partially leaked two days ago, The Pokemon Company and several celebrities teamed up for a unique ad that aired during this year's Super Bowl championship between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots.

The minute-long ad featured several celebrities describing their favorite Pokémon in detail before various creatures joined them on screen in a montage of pictures.

Famous celebrities and their favorite Pokemon are as follows:

  • Jisoo, Eevee

  • Lamine Yamal, Zygarde

  • Charles Leclerc, Arcanine

  • Young Miko, Gengar

  • Lady Gaga, Jigglypuff

  • Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Luxray

  • Trevor Noah, Psyduck

Aside from celebrities explaining why each specific Pokémon was their favorite, Lady Gaga performed her own Jigglypuff song.

“No matter who you are, everyone has a favorite Pokemon. What's your favorite?” The ad's tagline read.

Pokemon Gold and Silver hero with all three starter monsters.

It's been 25 years since the best Pokemon game took over the world

Game Freak still hasn't topped the brilliance of Pokemon Gold and Silver.

In addition to the ad, the official 30th anniversary website for Pokemon has also launched online. The launch follows the unveiling of the official logo, starring none other than Pikachu, as well as several merchandising activities, all in celebration of the franchise's major milestone.

For now, fans are encouraged to participate in Pokemon Go activations

The website, which is simply 30.pokemon.com/en-us, says, “What's your favorite?” The question continues. Against a backdrop of hundreds of different Pokémon from multiple generations that have come to define the franchise.

To further participate, fans are asked to download Pokemon Go or, if they're already a user, then “What's your favorite?” Hovering is encouraged. An in-game tab where over 1,000 Pokemon are available to take a snapshot of you and theirs.

The official website notes that you don't need to have a Pokemon Go account or log in to participate. Just having the app will allow you to display your favorite Pokemon.

Unfortunately, if you're sitting around hoping to see nearly three quarters of a football game, plus an extended halftime show, Gen 10 or a shadowdrop of long-requested ports of classic games, you're out of luck.

For now, that seems to be the main focal point of this weekend's Super Bowl campaign. However, you won't have to wait long for the next steps, as Pokemon reveals are on the horizon, with a leak date of February 27.

By then, we should, hopefully, get a better idea of what to expect over the next 10 months. Until then, what's your favorite Pokemon? For me, it's Gengar, so seeing him in a live-action commercial was worth the wait.
