In some ways, 2025 was a quiet year for video games. The PlayStation's two biggest exclusives were sequels below the likes of The Last of Us and God of War in terms of public recognition, the Xbox continued to flounder with a handful of games that felt well suited to the now extinct land of double-A experiences, and there was a huge GTA 6-sized Calen hole.
On the other hand, we saw the arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2 and the first new Donkey Kong in years, the much-anticipated release of Silksong, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 becoming the biggest surprise of the year by being the most successful game in the history of The Game Awards.
Amidst all these ups and downs though, there were some things – some games that were leaked or revealed before the year started, and by the time it was over, as much as we knew about them, it was a highlight reel for them. If you're looking for updates, be careful what you wish for. Last year, Silksong was on the list, as was Tomb Raider, which had two games revealed last December. However, so was Wonder Woman, which was cancelled. Let's hope these games avoid that fate.
blade
Generally, to qualify for this list, we go by radio silence. Not only are the obvious stuff not revealed by trailers, screens, or mechanics, but there are also no release dates, delays, or other mutterings from the studio. Technically, Blade isn't fully qualified, on December 23rd, game director Dinga Bacaba gave us a small update, but an update nonetheless.
However, the update was given “The team is hard at work, everyone is very proud and putting themselves out there. Please be patient, this will be a special game and we all hope it meets the high standards we set for ourselves and for you all”, which is sweet but tells us nothing, so I'm counting it out.
Wolves Among Us 2
In September, the writers of The Wolf Among Us 2 – who have since gone on to become AdHoc, releasing Dispatch late last year – said they had no idea what was going on with the game. Apart from several leaks about the imminent release that proved to be false, we have heard about The Wolf Among 2 since October 2024.
The 80 most anticipated games of 2026
The definitive list of every anticipated game of 2026, from the obvious big hitters to lesser-known gems.
Dispatch poses a problem for Telltale. On the one hand, its success proves that there's still an appetite for the Telltale formula. On the other hand, it feels a bit like a sign that the Telltale magic has left the building for good.
Motive Iron Man game
A job listing for Motive's untitled Iron Man game may have been posted over the summer, suggesting the game has single-player levels. That's all we know. It feels like an opportunity to strike while the iron is hot, but perhaps his MCU exploits elevate Iron Man to the level of a truly timeless hero.
With Black Panther and Captain America's 1943: Rise of Hydra games delayed this year, and the addition of Iron Man along with the cinematic return of the Avengers, 2026 could make 2026 the year that sees Marvel return to cultural dominance after last year's disappointing showing.
The Witcher remake
Announced in 2022, CD Projekt RED has been very busy since then, fixing Cyberpunk 2077 and adding the Phantom Liberty expansion, moving into sequels, and starting development on The Witcher 4; All of them have some kind of update in 2025. But all is quiet on the Rivian front, a remake of the first game.
Many players will suggest newcomers to the series start with 2 (or even just 3), so a polish (ha! geddit?) of the first game is well warranted. However, we don't know how the game is now.
Bioshock 4
Technically, we got an update on the game from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick: “It's going to come out. That I can say hands on heart without question.”
We're probably not going to hear about these 10 games for at least a year
These announced games need a bit more time to cook, but we're still excited to talk about them.
I don't think we can count this as new information on a game that has been in development since 2019, although various leaks have suggested development turmoil since then, which is at least a positive thing. Other than that and some vague leaks that suggest that BioShock 4 will look BioShocky, we're in the dark as we were about it. At least Ken Levine is basically making the same game in Judas.
Okami sequel
As expected, when Okami's long-awaited sequel was revealed at The Game Awards in 2024, we were warned that it was years away, and that updates would be few and far between. So it's proven, but Okami remains firmly in the minds of many gamers who grew up with Amaterasu by their side.
It may well end up on this list next year as well, but if the sequel is as good as the original Okami, it will be more than worth the wait.
Killer Bean Game
Revealed for some reason at Summer Game Fest 2024, this procedurally generated action roguelike saw you play as Killer Bean from those memes that were a bit out of date even then. We haven't heard anything on the game since, and that might be for the best.
