Solasta 2 compared to Baldur's Gate 3 in early access reviews

Solasta 2 received a lot of attention in the run-up to early access. Mostly that's thanks to how perfectly poised to fill the Baldur's Gate 3-sized hole in our lives, as it is yet another turn-based Dungeons & Dragons RPG.

Now, it's been available to play for less than a week, and it looks like it lives up to all the Baldur's Gate 3 comparisons. Early user reviews on Steam have been mostly positive, with praise for the combat, companions, and visuals. While there have been some concerns raised, many see this as a great foundation for the full game.

Solasta 2 players share their thoughts on the Early Access build

“Does it have its issues? Yes, and so did BG3 when it was released in Early Access,” reads one of the positive reviews for Solasta 2 in Early Access. “The game is a huge improvement from the first installment, and the devs are quick to listen to the community. The game has heart and is closer to D&D rules than any other game out there.”

We can see this sentiment echoed in the many positive reviews. “It's like the love child of Solasta 1 and BG3,” reads another review. They also praise the cast, which includes Amelia Tyler, Devor Wilde and Ben Starr – two of whom you'll remember from Baldur's Gate 3.

With all that said, some concerns have been mentioned in both positive and negative reviews.

“I have high hopes for the game on full release, unfortunately, right now it's close to unplayable,” reads one negative review. They go on to mention some performance issues they ran into, but also touch on the writing. “If anyone on the dev team reads this, I'm sorry, but from what I've seen so far the writing is mediocre – especially the dialogue options for the main characters. I apologize for another review mentioning BG3, but if I may, one of the best things about that game was how much personality all the characters had.”

We, of course, expect to address technical issues during early access, but as of this writing it remains to be seen if there will be any changes. There could be more good, as Baldur's Gate 3 changed a lot about its story and companions before its full launch, completely rewriting the Dream Guardian and Wyll as characters.

At least, Solasta 2 hasn't collapsed under the weight of expectations, which is no small feat when you're being compared to a Game of the Year winner before launch. Only time will tell if this is the next big thing for D&D fans looking for a gaming fix.
