The best avatar commander of the gathering is already obvious, and it's not Aang

All the cards revealed for the Avatar set have a very positive undertone Magic: The Gathering Compared to Spider-Man, fans praised how well the IP seemed to fit MTGThe world of and card mechanics. With four interesting core mechanics combined with types of elemental bending from Avatar, the new Magic: The Gathering The set has plenty of combo potential on its own as well as with other sets and fan-favorite cards. As an infinite format, this can be especially true for Commander, which already has incredible combos like the infamous Thasa's Oracle + Demonic Consultation. Now, a new commander from Avatar is rising, and it could be very powerful.

MTGKa Katara, the Waterbending Master is the OP Commander for Mono-Blue decks, and cards like Aang in the Crossroads are already competing for the spot of the best commanders from the set. Few cards are equally great at 99, proving to be versatile in any Commander deck. One such card is the newly revealed Wan Shi Tong, All-Knowing, who could easily be a great commander from the Avatar set, or a great card to fit into 99, if not both. This is due to a few reasons:

  • Wan Shi Tong has synergy with several Commander staples (especially in cEDH), such as:

    • Sisay, the Weatherlight Captain can tutor for it and/or use it to promote himself.

    • Valley Floodcolor untaps it due to its bird subtype and also gives it +1/+1 when a non-creature is enchanted.

    • Infinite mana sinks in decks like Keenan, Bonder Prodigy, or Flubbs, the Fool.

    • Combo with Hullbreaker Horror for infinite card draw.

    • Tymna, a powerful synergy with Weaver, is one of the most powerful and played commanders in the game.

    • Amazing reaction card vs. fetchlands or tutor cards to use, thanks to its flash capability.

  • Wan Shi Tong can ideally be cast on the opponent's turn, even for just 2 blue mana, as it can get a lot of +1/+1 counters during the turn cycle in Commander games because of how many Tutor-like abilities are played.

  • MTG's Rhystic Study can form a powerful stacks combo with Wan Shi Tong as the former's drawing cards and the latter's become even more powerful when using a teacher.

It's worth noting that, as a Commander, Wan Shi Tong is not exempt from the so-called “Commander Tax”, meaning that the extra mana required to cast from the area cannot be diluted to X fraction of its cost. If it's removed once, for example, players pay 2 generics and 2 blue to cast it, and then add X mana as they wish.

Say Hello to Magic: The Gathering's Best Commander Card in Avatar: The Last Airbender

The reason why Wan Shi Tong can be so strong as a Commander lies in the fact that it is available to cast immediately from the Command Zone. Since most Commander decks contain at least some Tutor-like cards (such as fetchlands, ramp cards that fetch lands from the library, proper Tutor cards like Demonic Tutor, and Tutor-like abilities like Sisai's), it's unlikely that Wan Shi Tong will become big and powerful as a Commander in any game. Given that it has both flight and alertness, Wan Shi Tong can be an excellent attacker and blocker in combat once it's powered up.

How to play MTG's Wan Shi Tong, all-knowing in Commander

Like many great commanders MTGWan Shi Tong can work wonders with various combos and strategies. It can be built as a Bird Tribal deck, it can serve as a potential candidate for Voltron strategies, it can fuel any strategy with easily accessible card draw in the command zone, and it can work perfectly in artifact-matter decks.

A powerful Voltron card in MTG to consider for Wan Shi Tong is Commander Plate, which to cast 1 generic and equip 3 generics, will give it +3/+3 and protection from white, black, red, and green.

The possibilities are endless with Wan Shi Tong, and while it doesn't cater to a specific play style, it remains very flexible. Still, since it's a mono-blue commander, it's naturally bound to play interaction spells like Flusterstorm, Fierce Guardianship, and other counterspells. MTGIt is necessary to keep it alive in the face of removal, so that it may grow in strength.
