Magic: The GatheringThe Lorwyn Eclipsed set is a homecoming release 19 years after the original Lorwyn block. Lorwyn wasn't a commercial success according to Wizards of the Coast's metrics, but the story might be very different now, as Lorwyn Eclipsed's trailer was the most watched in the game's history. Beyond that, MTG Fans have been pouring love for Lorwyn Eclipsed on social media and forums, showing that there really is a vibrant world to explore on this plane. Between great core set cards and some value-packed Prokon Commander decks, Magic: The GatheringThe next set of has a lot of content to rave about — and a specific commander that should be on your radar.
Discourse beyond despite problematic universes MTGNot all UB sets of 2025 were met with the same reception, and the same goes for 2026, even before they were released. MTGThe Avatar set featured some incredibly strong cards, and many new additions that the community loved regardless of fans' experience with the IP. One of those standout choices is The Walls of Ba Sing Se, a 0/30 wall with a defender that makes your other permanents indestructible. There were already a lot of good strategies for this card, but Lorwyn Eclipsed adds another commander that makes a 0/30 creature even brighter.
Magic: The Gathering's Lorwyn eclipse may finally reset a long-running pattern
Magic: The Gathering's 2026 schedule begins with Lorwyn Eclipsed in January, and will likely break a trend that has been in place since August of 2024.
Say hello to MTG's Doran, surrounded by time
Base set in for Lorwyn Eclipsed MTG Contains a card called Doran, surrounded by time. It's a 4-CMC (1 Generic, 1 White, 1 Black, 1 Green) 0/5 legendary creature that casts spells harder than your creature to cast their power cost 1 less, and then attacking or blocking creatures you control get +X/+X until end of turn, where the difference between their power and X is.
On EDHREC, the website used to keep track of MTG commanders and their potential combos (even the unexplored ones), the new Doran, Besieged by Time card is the fourth most popular. The chart is:
-
High Perfect Morcant – 2,057 Dec
-
Maralen, Fae Ascendant – 1,145 decks
-
Eirdu, bringer of dawn / Isilu, bringer of twilight – 1,015 decks
-
Doran, surrounded by time – 624 Deck
There is another version of Doran called Doran, the Siege Tower, which is a 3-mana 0/5 creature that allows your creatures to deal combat damage with their toughness. It can be played alongside Doran surrounded by time, due to MTG's legendary rules.
How Lorwyn Eclipsed makes Avatar's greatest creature OP in MTG
This card already combos with itself, becoming a 5/10 whenever it attacks or blocks, but it breaks down The Walls of Ba Sing Se even more for several reasons:
-
Doran, surrounded by time is relatively cheap MTG Commander at 4 mana, and it makes The Wall of Ba Sing Se easier and faster to cast, which can be a problem for an 8-mana creature.
-
Doran means Azban identity (white, black, green). MTG Mana rocks are easily accessible in the deck, increasing mana production more easily, which is an added advantage for walls.
-
-
Wall of Ba Sing Se can be used in conjunction with Doran and Felother the Steadfast from the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander deck.
-
There are many layers to the combo, as Doran makes The Walls a 30/60 creature when attacking or blocking, Fellother allows The Walls to attack even if it's a defender and deals combat damage equal to its toughness, and by spending 3 mana and tapping Fellother, you can sacrifice The Walls to draw 60 cards and if the Walls block or block.
-
-
Jaws of Defeat is a 4-cmc Black Enchantment that can be played in Doran/Walls decks to cause the opponent to lose 30 life (the difference between The Wall of Ba Sing Se's power and toughness) when a creature enters the battlefield.
-
It also works with the Blink on White effects used in The Walls of Ba Sing Se, such as Ephemerate, Last Blink, and Restoration Angel. Also works with MTGAvatar mechanic of airbending.
-
-
Arbor Adherent can generate a Doran + Walls combo of at least 60 mana, as it makes mana equal to the greatest toughness among creatures you control.
-
Temporary effects like Stoneskin, which gives +0/+10 to an enchanted creature, can further improve the Doran + Wall combo because if The Wall of Ba Sing Se's toughness increases, attacking or blocking increases its power (and increases its toughness even more).
-
Denying Yield is a 2-mana instant MTG A spell that gives a creature +2/+7, meaning that walls will become a 39/74 creature when attacking or blocking.
-
-
Unnatural Growth is an enchantment that costs 1 mana and 4 green of any color, giving creatures you control double power and toughness at the start of combat. Without additional effects, the Doran + The Walls combo will get The Wall of Ba Sing Se a stunning 60/120.
-
Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus is a 7-mana 4/6 creature with the same effect, and they stack. If Doran, The Walls, Unnatural Growth, and Zopandrel are on the field, The Wall of Ba Sing Se can reach 0/120 before attacking or blocking, and become 120/240 while attacking or blocking.
-
-
Cards like Primal Rage, a 2-mana spell that stomps your creatures, are highly recommended to make the combo less likely to fall flat in combat.
-
Canopy Gargantuan is a 7-mana 7/7 creature that allows you to put +1/+1 counters on each creature you control at the start of each turn, equal to that creature's Toughness. This means that Doran becomes 5/10 and Walls 30/60 before combat (so a 15/20 and 90/120, when attacking or blocking, respectively) and after just one turn, with their Strength and Toughness scaling.
Walls of ba sing se combos in MTG can skyrocket out of control
As you can see, there are many ways to take this combo to the next level, and many cards make it scale to incredible numbers. For example, what happens after two turns of Canopy Gargantuan if you have Doran, The Wall of Ba Sing Se, Unnatural Growth, and Joppandrel, Hunger Dominus all in play? The answer is that walls become a 90/120 creature before attacking or blocking, at which point, it becomes 360/480. yes Frankly, you don't need all of this to win when the basic combo is set up, and you can simply protect The Walls from potential removal, but be warned — this playstyle can easily and quickly make you the definition of an archenemy.
