The Star Wars KOTOR remake is “still in development” after five years

Where to even begin with the KOTOR remake? It was announced almost five years ago, with a short cinematic teaser. And it is. No, seriously, we haven't heard anything else since then – apart from the fact that it has changed developers.

Now, we are once again assured that a KOTOR remake exists and is in active development. This time, the assurance comes from the chief creative officer of Saber Interactive, the second developer to take the reins on the project.

While Saber insists that a Kotor remake is still in the works, it won't say much more than that.

This comes from an interview with IGN, in which Tim Willits, CCO of Saber Interactive, was asked for an update on the ill-fated project. If you want specific details, don't hold your breath.

“Yeah, it's still in development. That's all I can say,” he told IGN. No, we're not getting any more than that – it still exists, and that's all we're getting for now.

Interestingly, this is the line we've been hearing constantly since the 2021 remake was announced. Whenever fans are concerned, or someone close to the project is interviewed, we're told that a KOTOR remake is still in development. Sometimes, someone who is asked even feels upset that they are being asked about it. Don't you hate it when you own the rights to one of the most sought-after remakes of all time, and people keep making it clear they want to pay you for it? Sounds scary.

Honestly, at this point, KOTOR as a whole might be one of the most fumbled series of all time. The original game is a BioWare classic, one of the greatest games of all time. It got a sequel (which, in my humble opinion, is even better), but a new developer, Obsidian, was quick to get it out the door. KOTOR 3 never happened, but there was an MMO, at least. Aside from that, the originals were ported a few times – including a Switch port of KOTOR 2 that was supposed to add cut content as DLC, was canceled, and then faced lawsuits from fans.

A report last year claimed that a remake of Kotor was in the works, but it was expanded upon, claiming that Kotor 2 would also be a remake. But even if it's true, we shouldn't expect to see it anytime soon.
