Veilguard author reveals Varric's nicknames for new friends

summary

  • As longtime Dragon Age fans will remember, Varric has a habit of giving friends nicknames.

  • Early Draft of Dragon Age: Vilguard continued this trend, but was dropped mid-development.

  • Varric's author, Mary Kirby, shares what these nicknames used to be.

Varric has now appeared in three Dragon Age games and has always been an irreplaceable member of the crew. In his first two games, Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition, he also had nicknames for everyone in his gang, which sadly didn't make it into Dragon Age: The Valeguard.

But now, the author of Varric has come to the rescue. Mary Kirby shares what names Varryk used for the members of the Velgard, completing a trilogy of fan-favorite dwarves by giving his friends nicknames many of them would hate.

Here are Varic's nicknames for companions in Dragon Age: Vilguard

As shared on BlueSky, here are the nicknames Varric gave to members of the Veilguard.

  • Neve: Clever

  • Lukanis: Ugly

  • Belara: Bangles

  • Davrin: The hero

  • Taash: Smoking

  • Emmerich: Bones

  • Harding: doesn't get one – “he's scared by her”.

Of course, we hear the nickname back in the game, as Varric refers to Solas again as Chuckles. Oh, and Hero is the same name that Varic had for Blackwall, so he seems to have a thing for the Gray Wardens. At least this one turned out Actually yes A Gray Warden, couldn't blame him for repeating himself in this instance.

This isn't actually Varric's first iteration. If your Hawk had a humorous personality in Dragon Age 2, he will also call you Chuckles. This gives us another reason why Hawke doesn't want to get involved with the Inquisition – it would be a bit awkward to get caught that way.

As Kirby explained in the post, these nicknames were intended to appear in the game at some point in development. They didn't make it beyond the early draft though, so we don't actually hear Varryk use them in the game.

Unfortunately, Kirby is no longer working on the series either. Despite being so integral to the series' success, after writing Varric from Dragon Age 2, he was included alongside other longtime devs at BioWare last year. Despite this, the directors of The Wellguard have suggested that the series will continue, we'll have to see what it looks like as more of its writers leave BioWare.
