What was supposed to be a new and exciting generation of gaming turned into a two-year struggle for both companies and gamers, as shortages began to slow the generation down. By 2023, the supply chain issues had mostly been resolved, so the two consoles wouldn't hit their full stride until years after launch. Now that PS6 rumors and Xbox Project Helix speculation have circulated, many gamers feel it's too early for the new generation to debut. However, both Sony and Microsoft have a short time frame to capitalize on the new generation before it feels outdated.

One place that's been talking a lot about the logistics of the next-gen wave is Reddit. Leaks from the YouTube channel Moore's Law is Dead have been igniting some interesting conversations about Sony's future plans, and a comment from Reddit user XJ–0461 really stuck out to me. A leak from Moore's Law claims that the PS6 is “not too many years away,” and XJ-0461 makes a solid point about such a bold claim:
Regardless of global trends, the PS6 can't be delayed too much from the original plan because they have a window of how strong the tech is where they want to release it. If they wait too long, it will start far behind the current tech.

This is a solid point that really gets to the main reason why Moore's Law is Dead's Leak is probably not too far from accurate. Of course, every single leak and rumor should be met with a healthy amount of skepticism, but the technologies that both Sony and Microsoft are working on for their next-gen consoles will only be impressive for so long. The general expectation is that the next-gen console will come out in 2027 or early 2028. This is purely speculation, but looking back at the time between past consoles it makes sense.

Since Sony and Microsoft are direct competitors, they continue to release consoles within at least a year of each other. PlayStation and Xbox consoles have been on the same timeline since 2013 at this point, so it only makes sense that the two are once again launching in the same year. If both companies are following past trends, that would make 2027 an ideal target year. That doesn't mean these leaks aren't just important to Xbox fans, though. According to Moore's Law, the source of the dead is, Sony's PlayGo is a direct answer to the Xbox Smart Delivery System. The source also claimed that this is further proof that Sony is deep into PS6 development:

The next-gen price point is one of the biggest questions gamers want answered
It's no secret that the tech industry as a whole is currently facing some serious problems. Companies like Sony and Microsoft are raising prices due to RAM shortages and the current general economic challenges. The price of Xbox Game Pass was raised last year, and this month the PS5 saw another price increase. It wasn't a small change, either, as the three models saw price increases that ranged between $100 and $150. There are understandable concerns about how the combination of RAM shortages and rising production costs could delay new generations or introduce consoles that are too expensive for the average gamer.
On the bright side, Moore's Law sources also claim that Sony is aiming for a cheaper console to produce, which will lower the price. Analysts have been predicting next-gen console prices, with Patcher Factor podcast host Michael Patcher predicting that higher price points could end console gaming as we know it. Between Moore's Law's more optimistic view of Dead's Source and other analysts predicting $1000 or higher consoles, there's no way to know what Sony and Microsoft are going to do.

Reports that the next-gen Xbox could play PC games and that the PS6 could potentially be twice as powerful as its predecessor and the Xbox Series X/S are both intriguing possibilities, and Sony and Microsoft want to debut their technological advancements as soon as possible. Waiting too long means that the two companies risk launching products that no longer look impressive.
The current generation has faced some rocky moments, and the PS6 and Xbox Project Helix may avoid the same fate. Right now, these next-gen console release dates are being kept in the shadows. Only time will tell what Sony and Microsoft decide to do, but it will be on whatever timeline they see fit.
