when it comes MarathonThere are some topics that are discussed time and time again. MarathonConfrontation's poor player count with its critical acclaim is a common talking point, the game's difficulty is regularly highlighted in both ranked and regular play, and — like most competitive multiplayer games — balance comes up regularly. Recently, knives have been the talk of the town, as runners have been stabbing opponents regardless of whether their enemies have purple shields or no shields. MarathonThe latest update targets knives, making it necessary for players to properly build around the melee to wipe out groups. After sorting out this issue, players have returned to a mechanic they still think needs adjusting: thermal scopes.
to be clear, MarathonThe thermal scopes have been nerfed once before. The changes came in update 1.0.0.4, and they saw the following distance reductions for thermal highlights:
-
Effective range of snipers went from 180 meters to 100 meters.
-
Precision Rifle effective range dropped from 100 to 80.
-
LMGs, rifles and SMGs are now only effective at 60 meters as opposed to 65.
-
The pistol has fallen to 40 meters instead of 55.
In addition to these distance adjustments, visual clarity was reduced for thermal scopes to make it easier to pull off headshots. And while Bungie's handling of the thermal scopes was well received, especially given the rapidity with which the changes were made, players feel that the thermal scopes are too robust. It's not hard to see why, though instead of just complaining, players have gotten creative and offered Bungie the best possible solution to the game's OP thermals.
The first step in a marathon comeback is to repeat the exact same move
With the positive marathon reviews continuing to pour in, it may be time for Bungie to go back to the well to rekindle interest in its breakout shooter.
The reign of terror for Marathon's thermal scopes, explained
Although it is true that the biggest problem with thermal optics at launch was their effective range – very early on Marathon Clips showed players running with sniper rifles from around 200 meters away, clearly seeing opponents even though they didn't know they were being targeted – they stayed strong. This is because, even with the fuzzier goals that follow within Marathon1.0.0.4 update, they help players that are usually hard to stand out. Take Dire Marsh, for example, which has a fair bit of foliage to hide in. It is essentially useless if thermal is in play. Likewise, thermals can help a ton on maps like Kryo where visibility is intentionally difficult (although the signal jammers used regularly here help prevent them from being dominant).

In addition to preventing players from hiding, thermals counter several mechanics and playstyles. MarathonAssassins feel vulnerable because of them, smoke grenades are effectively negated, etc. Add in weather effects like ambient rain or the fog of Dire Marsh, and players without thermals feel like they don't even have a chance because they can't see the enemy shooting at them. And if even the slightest bit of someone's shell is visible through a window or behind a barricade, the thermals will pick it up, completely ruining the group's efforts tactically.
While some victims of thermal scopes hate them and don't want to go inside them Marathon However, the reality is that they are fun to use in games where smoke and weather effects are common. So, instead of taking them out completely, it would be nice to see them not regress in a way that keeps them powerful and satisfying without being overpowering. One solution is to make them a rare attachment drop, but a more clever idea comes up Marathon Community member kite.01, as it adds to Bungie's already impressive sense of immersion within the game. According to kite.01, since shells run on heat, heat build-up should determine how bright the target appears within player range.
For this to work, there obviously needs to be some sort of base heat on every runner so that thermals aren't useless against players who don't generate heat. Perhaps the shell's eye, or a few individual pieces per shell (ie a vandal's arm cannon) may glow faintly before the heat builds up. Then, as the target runner uses sprinting, jumping, abilities to add to their heat bar, they can light up and become visible from a distance. This can cause players to think more carefully about how much heat they're using, adding to the things Tau Seti IV needs to be careful about. More like making more noise Marathon As can lead to runner's ruin, athletes can suffer the consequences when they are too careless with their heat management.
Along with the above mock-up posted by AbledShawl giving an idea of how this thermal tip might look in-game, it looks like Marathan's passionate player base has given Bungie an ideal fix on a silver platter. Midseason update for Marathon It remains to be seen whether the exact concept or in another way the nerfs borrow from Thermal, but it is good that more adjustments are on the way. Bungie has done a phenomenal job of listening to players so far, and realizing that the initial hit on thermals wasn't enough to get the job done is another example of that.
