The WWE Mick Foley is losing one of his most beloved members after announcing he is parting ways with the company over his relationship with President Donald Trump. Over the years, Mick Foley has graced the WWE stage and thrilled fans around the world, but Trump's comments about director and writer Rob Reiner's recent death prompted him to cut ties with the promoter.
Mick Foley is one of the most famous wrestlers in the sport. Back in 1996, when it was still known as the WWF, Foley became one of the main wrestlers that would define the Attitude Era. This era marked a turning point for WWE, as it pushed its stars even more into the spotlight, creating pop culture icons. Along with Mick Foley, wrestlers such as “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock, and Triple H would become some of the company's biggest icons. Despite being retired, Foley has maintained a relationship with WWE, but has made it clear that he does not feel comfortable being a part of the organization because of Trump.
Earlier this week, American movie icon Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle were murdered in their Los Angeles home. Across the internet, fans and colleagues are sharing their grief and fond memories of the director. However, President Trump said on his Truth social page that Reiner died of a “debilitating brain disease called Trump Derangement Syndrome.” The comment immediately ignited a backlash from both sides of the aisle, and it eventually prompted Foley to leave WWE behind for good. The beloved wrestling icon shared his decision via Instagram. In the caption, he said President Trump's comments on Reiner's death were the “last straw.” He said, “I no longer want to represent a company that drives our country toward totalitarianism and hangs people who seem to be devoid of mercy.”
President Trump has had a relationship with WWE long before he got into politics, even being featured in the Battle of the Billionaires at WrestleMania 23. In later years, he maintained a relationship with Vince McMahon, even going so far as to appoint his wife, Linda McMahon, as his current Secretary of Education. Although he is no longer a mainstay on the roster, Mick Foley leaving WWE is a huge hit for the company. President Trump's comments are not the only reason for his departure. Foley further explained that, “I have been concerned for several months about WWE's close relationship with Donald Trump – especially in light of his administration's brutal and inhumane treatment of immigrants.” Reiner's comments about the death sealed the deal for Foley.
During his time with WWE, Mick Foley was recognized by many people. In addition to his own name, he has taken on the beloved characters of Cactus Jack, Mankind, and Dude Love.
Although he has confirmed that he is leaving the company, it won't be official until June. The wrestling legend explained that his contract is still active, but once it expires, he has zero intention of signing a new one. It's been a shocking week for WWE fans, as not only did Mick Foley announce his departure, but John Cena's last match ended in defeat. Foley's announcement that he is leaving WWE will be a sad moment for many of his fans.
