The best magic school anime

One of the most common themes in anime is fantastical settings where the adventure never ends. Add elements of a school setting, and you have an anime about a magic academy. Anime set in magic academies Sky has skyrocketed in popularity in the last decade. These shows depict epic stories of heroism, drama, and interpersonal relationships.

9 Great Anime Set in a Jungle, Ranked

Fans who enjoy jungle settings should check out the following anime.

Fan imaginations can run wild thanks to the many anime shows that depict magical academies, e.g The The Misfit of the Demon King Academy and The Random of Magic High School. However, not all Magic school anime are created equally, and there are some that really shine.

We're going to be strict about the definition of “magical schools”. for example, Iruma-kun's setting is specifically called “Demon School”, so it won't be included even though it shares a lot with magical academies.

Updated by Mark Sammut on October 25, 2025: Autumn 2025 is not memorable Magic school animeWhich is fine since this year has otherwise been kind to this niche theme. Still, if you're craving some more magical goodness, we've added two more shows, both of which are isekai villain anime. I am in love with villains and from bureaucrats to villains are now part of the list.

Rule of Seven Spells

MyAnimeList: 6.56

Kicking things off with a split magic school anime, Rule of Seven Spells One of those shows that feels like an advertisement for a light novel that can only be enjoyed and done in isolation. That's not to say the anime is bad, but rather that it can be a frustrating watch.

notoriously late, Rule of Seven Spells It spends its first five episodes setting up not only its world and the concept of magic, but also its definition of a magician. They are beings who are driven by the pursuit of knowledge, to the point that they can become completely consumed by its allure. Despite containing mostly predictable stories, the anime accomplishes some great world-building throughout its run, creating a universe that feels magical yet terrifying.

We meet Oliver, a new student at Kimberly Magic Academy who is highly gifted with a sword but seems relatively meek at first. He soon develops a relationship with Nanao, a samurai with a dark past. They quickly become involved in the school's more cutthroat and dangerous practices, especially when they find themselves in the maze.

Magic-kun! Renaissance

MyAnimeList: 7

22

Most of the time Magic school anime Focus on the action, as the setting usually offers plenty of opportunities to showcase unique and visually impressive strengths. However, not every series goes this route, and Magic-kun! Renaissance Sets itself apart by being a straight-up reverse harem. Yes, this is one of those shows that can only be recommended to people who are into that genre rather than people looking for stories set in magical academies. While not exactly unimportant, the latter is mostly just window dressing, and the focus is on Kohana's surprisingly endearing relationships.

Magic-kun! Renaissance Set in a school for the arts, albeit one that uses magic instead of traditional talent. Kohana seems unable to use magic at first, but she still attracts the attention of the school's most attractive graduates. Magic-kun! Renaissance Reverse Harem doesn't do much to set itself apart from the crowd, but it's a decent enough example of that genre.

Villainy Level 99: I may be a hidden lord, but I'm not a demon lord

MyAnimeList Score: 7.13

Light Magic and Hero is progressing as smoothly as an otome game. At least, until Yumila Dolknes, the hidden boss, regains her memories of her past life as a human and realizes she's in on the game. As someone who always prefers the fantasy elements of a game, Yumiella decides not to let her life, especially her love life, be dictated by game mechanics and levels up as quickly as she can.

In all of this, Yumila makes a mistake: she doesn't hide her powers well when she enrolls in the Royal Academy and is revealed to be level 99 in just 15 years, sending the entire otome game world into a frenzy. With this, Yumiella should be able to determine his fate, right? In the midst of uncertainty, she must now deal with constant attention, which she did not bargain for.

Villainy level 99 Works almost entirely thanks to Yumila, who is just an awkward lovable protagonist who fumbles her way through social situations. There's almost nothing strange about it in school, but as an anime that kind of works, at least, in part the otome game is a parody of Isekai stories.

Trinity Seven

MyAnimeList: 7.03

i can assume Trinity Seven One of those “love it or hate it” type shows, a statement that can be said for every harem under the sun. The 2014 series is even more divisive as it belongs to the “fight” subgenre, which is often associated with fewer fight scenes. Trinity Seven Pretty average action, but it's elevated by a decent cast of characters and a fun magical school setting.

Arata is set to become a demon lord, but he needs to get some real education to prepare himself for the role. So, he attends the Royal Bible Academy, which is home to the Trinity Seven. The latter are all girls who are roughly his age, and the harem shenanigans begin. Trinity Seven It is mainly for people in fighting harems, although it is a decent one Magic school anime Also.

The returner's magic must be special

MyAnimeList: 7.06

A rare anime based on humans, The returner's magic must be special A familiar but still solid hook. After failing to save the world, Desir travels back in time a decade, hopefully providing an opportunity to make things right. He enrolls in a prestigious academy that echoes society's class distinctions, and he prepares to perform for the common people as he forms a team to break down those walls. Because of his experience, Ichha focuses on accelerating the growth of his friends, all in an effort to increase their chances of survival in the future.

The returner's magic must be special Absolutely loved the manhwa, and the anime has been decent but lackluster. The core trio of Desir, Pram, and Romantica is likable enough, though the latter can be a little disappointing at first. The animation is mostly just passable, but season 1 was successful enough to warrant an upcoming sequel.

I'm in love with the villain

MyAnimeList: 7.35

Another isekai villain anime, I'm in love with the villain The game's heroine, Rey, shakes things up by reincarnating the protagonist, Rei, instead of its baddie Claire. However, Ray's favorite character is Claire, and he is very much in love with her. So, she makes it her mission to invade Claire's personal space and make sure they become best friends (or, hopefully, more). Surprisingly, the villain isn't too into Rae's advances, but they eventually begin to strike a bond.

I'm in love with the villain Set almost entirely at the Royal Academy, which is a bog-standard magical school. Unlike many of these series, this anime allows the characters to use their magic relatively, and it also has some beautiful set pieces. However, the focus is on Claire and Ray's relationship, everything else takes a back seat.

Fusing all trends, From Bureaucrat to Villain: Father Reborn! An isekai gender-bender villain Magic Academy is an otome game anime! It's also a sort of harem, though the protagonist is largely unaware that they're involved in one. More importantly, the show is good…as long as you're into at least some of its tropes. A middle-aged father meets Truck-kun and ends up as Grace, the villain in his daughter's otome game. She needs to make her way through the story in one piece, while ensuring that the heroine and love interests grow enough to fulfill their roles.

most of From bureaucrats to villains Taking place in a magical school, Grace also gained a familiar at one point. That said, the anime is primarily a comedy and doesn't focus much on the magical side of things, so don't expect any particularly spectacular fights or showcases.

Cages and Tests: Summon animals

MyAnimeList: 7.50 (Season 1)

Cages and Tests: Summon animals May not be the first Magic Academy anime That comes to mind, mainly because the show is remembered for its over-the-top humor rather than its inclusion of magical or supernatural elements. Besides, anime has a lot in common School Rumble and Daily life of high-school boys than The Misfit of Demon King AcademyAnd the “magic” of school often comes in short battles that don't matter in the grand scheme of things.

however, Brackets and tests This is one of the more refreshing and memorable stories set in one of these types of schools, especially because of the emphasis on slice of life silliness. Comedy revolves around a lot of, well, stupidity, so it's a bit of an acquired taste. That said, if the humor clicks with someone, they will get a lot out of this series.

10 Supernatural Anime From 2010 That Are Underrated

The 2010s is a golden age of anime series, especially when it comes to great supernatural animes. However, these series are highly underrated.

The Onmyou Academy was built to preserve the Onmyoudou magic technique. Upon entering the school, Harutora has no knowledge of magic, but as the anime progresses, he learns that he has magic, but it was sealed, and soon, he can break the seal and become very knowledgeable and proficient in the use of Onmyodo.
