Hazlight Studios has perfected co-op. A way out, It takes twoand Split Fiction done efficiently 2-player games which takes full advantage of the multiplayer formula. You can't imagine these stories being told effectively without co-op, at least not in a way that preserves their core themes and gameplay. Although all three are equally excellent, It takes two It was the release that really put the haze on the map, and it set the bar for modern co-op games in the process. A way out and Split Fiction It exists in its shadow, even if they can excel in some areas.
indeed, Like a game It takes two Don't come around often, and 100% identical projects don't exist. However, local co-op games are gaining momentum recently, thanks in part to Hazelight's efforts and successes, so the future is bright and full of adventures that use storytelling, puzzles and teamwork. Like It takes twoIts greatest strength is its imagination, let's highlight some Upcoming 2026 co-op games That should also be a unique identity that sets them apart from the crowd.
Updated by Mark Sammut on December 14, 2025: The year is almost over, but we don't have to wait long for 2026 to start producing great games. Co-op masterpieces like It Takes Two don't come around often, but I've added two new games (IKUMA and Orbitals) that seem perfect for fans of Hazelight's project.
Ikuma – Frozen Compass
A great co-op game for players who love emotional journeys takes two
While IKUMA No release date locked in yet, it is One of the most promising co-op games to watch heading into 2026. Do not make two players mandatory It takes twoMooneye's upcoming game is designed around a cooperative adventure, though not with two people. The story revolves around Sam and his husky Ellie, who are stranded in the Arctic and need to find their way back home. So, yes, one of you will be in charge of the dog, and Ellie seems like a proper fully developed character rather than just existing to help Samya out occasionally. IKUMA There's also split-screen, so players aren't always tied to each other.
19 games perfect for long distance couples
These charming online co-op games are perfect for couples in long-distance relationships.
Although it does not include round trip, IKUMA Still brings the alien-like world to life, as the frozen tundra might as well exist on another planet. The story also emphasizes a mystery element, as Sam and Ellie try to figure out what's going on in this strange land. Yes, cursing is included. As anyone who owns a pet knows, the bond between owner and companion can be as tight as any family bond, and IKUMA This dynamic seems set to really build on. In terms of gameplay, this project looks like a pure adventure with some survival mechanics rather than a puzzle game. It takes two
Animal
Perfect for friends who want story-driven puzzle co-op (horror).
Admittedly, this is a personal choice, as I can't wait to get my hands on Tarsier Studio. Animal. of the developer Little nightmares The entries are incredible horror puzzle-platformers that shine in all three genres, which is far from an easy feat. Animal Seems to be cut from the same cloth as those titles, albeit with one important change: co-op. opposite Little Nightmare 2The odd decision to feature dual heroes but no multiplayer, Animal Will allow two friends to team up for local or online support. The leads of the story are also siblings, and their bond can be tested or strengthened, which will be somewhat similar. It takes twoof the married couple, Cody and May.
When there is no multiversal traversal facility, Animal It takes place in an otherworldly area that seems ripped straight from a Lovecraftian hellscape, and the campaign should feature an array of unique locations. The heroes must survive a stressful journey to rescue and save their friend, and they will stumble and encounter things other than friendly. tonally, Animal is very different from It takes twoAnd you need to be at least somewhat horrified to fully consider it. That said, the gameplay should focus mainly on puzzles and maybe some stealth.
classes
A space-travel co-op adventure about two explorers
Well, this game was a pleasant surprise at the awards. classes The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive has a wicked art style and love for co-op. As far as I can currently tell, the game only seems to support co-op; but, classes Still mostly shrouded in mystery, so it might even allow for a solo run. However, its debut trailer clearly positions the project as a “two-player” first, as the story revolves specifically around two space explorers who are trying to save their home. Split-screen is part of the equation, and there will be segments where players take on complementary but different actions (eg one controls the ship and the other fires their guns).
We will have to wait and see to know more classesBut everything shown is very encouraging. The visuals have a charming retro tone while still being modern, and the premise should serve as a good base for telling an adventure that takes you to some wild places. Gameplay, again, is mostly unknown, but puzzles and platforming should be central.
Haunted Claws
The perfect cozy co-op option
Not in a nightmare? So, how about a scary game of all breeds of cozy and adorable? Haunted Claws Puts you and a partner as dogs. Yes, you heard that right, you play as a dog. Well, that's probably enough information to get anyone interested, but let's dive into it a little deeper.

Haunted Claws These heroic dogs find themselves entering a haunted mansion in search of their missing master, and they will encounter many terrifying creatures along their journey. They will need to explore, solve puzzles, and complete mysteries, all while trying to avoid a grizzly end. Also, you play as a dog. Did I mention it already?
Oasis
A co-op physics brawling adventure
It takes two Overall tells a good story, but there are a lot of people who love it primarily for the gameplay rather than the emotional journey of Cody and May. Hazelight's genius lies in its ability to blend story and mechanics, creating a complete and complementary experience. Oasis Featuring an entertaining “good vs. evil” story, the gameplay element should be covered.
Set on a floating mountain that looks stunning from the available footage, a group of animal-esque friends embark on a dangerous mission to save their home, and they're ready to hack and slash their way through all kinds of enemies. OasisThe combat is based on physics, which is unusual and should feel unique. Although action seems to be the main focus, the game will likely include platforming and maybe some puzzles, but don't quote me on that.
The best co-op games to play after the beat takes two
It Takes Two is one of the best co-op games out there right now, but there are some other great co-op games to go back to after finishing it.
