Set for the upcoming Mega Evolution – Ascended Heroes Pokemon TCG Not one of them though. At first blush, it's immediately clear that this set is for fans, for active players, for collectors, and, UnfortunatelyFor the ne'er-do-wells.

Pokemon TCG: Why Mega Evolution – Ascended Heroes is a Big Deal

Not only is Mega Evolution – Ascended Heroes a huge set, but there are more cards to follow. Not even counting gold cards, Pikachu, Gengar, Dragonite, and Mewtwo are all big card names worth chasing. Art can sometimes be a big determinant for these sets, and it's already clear that the art of this set is second to none. And given the sheer number of SIRs, the pull rate is going to be astronomical, and it's going to be impossible to buy a single for the first month. Hopefully, it's not as bad as Prismatic Evolution and is just as generous Pokemon TCGof Crown Zenith, but one thing is clear: these cards are valuable.

Something like Mega Gengar ex SIR is likely to be very expensive in that first month, if not longer, especially as the cards have appreciated in value over the years. In fact, it's one of those special investment sets where you buy everything, let it appreciate for a decade, and cash in. Unfortunately, such a price is going to attract scalpers and whales who buy more than the average fan or collector. To have a chance to compete and take down a set, fans want to be ready and quick to draw.

Everything is shaping up for Mega Evolution – Ascended Heroes to be bigger, if not bigger than Prismatic Evolution. Prismatic was one of the best sellers Pokemon TCG Ever seen record price spikes online, and buying due to scalpers was incredibly difficult. On top of that, pull rates were exorbitant and it was possible to get away with ETB with basically nothing. Hence, Prismatic Evolution's Umbreon saw a price tag of ~$3K. Again, fingers crossed that Mega Evolution – Ascended Heroes is more generous, but it's hard to say. As the old adage says to hope for the best and prepare for the worst, to do that, fans want to be prepared to deal with high prices and scalpers.

  • Be patient and don't fall prey to FOMO

  • Know where you're going to buy, how you're going to buy from that site, and have payment information ready if not easily uploaded to the site.

  • Support local game stores for reasonable prices (and check with them early)

  • Use apps for restock alerts

  • Pokemon Center is best for direct purchases

  • Avoid resale sites like eBay and buy from scalpers

  • IRL: Ask someone who sells Pokemon cards to identify resellers about trivia

  • Bonus tip: Avoid “too good to be true” deals as fakes are possible
