How To Build A Base In Hytale

Part of playing a survival game like Hytale is in its Exploration mode focused on venturing forth into the world is having a way to ensure your survival overnight while monsters are out, a place to store your unneeded items for the moment, and somewhere to put all your crafting tables for safe keeping.

There’s plenty that goes into building a base in Hytale, and while there’s certainly no one “right” way to build yourself a headquarters in this game, there are some things you might want to keep in mind as you begin considering where and when to settle.

These tips are for making a base in the game’s Exploration mode and assumes you’ll be unlocking materials and recipes progressively. If you’re playing in Creative mode and have everything unlocked from the start of a new server, then you’re limited only by your imagination!

Use What You Can At First

Gather And Build Using Whatever You Can

When you start a new world in Exploration mode in Hytale, you’ve got nothing but the clothes on your custom avatar’s back, and while you’ve painstakingly selected them before the start of the game, they’re not going to be of much help. Thankfully, when you first start out, you’ll find easy-to-access resources around the overworld like sticks and loose stone rubble that can be picked up without any of the tools you’ve yet to make.

You’ll use these tools to make Crude Tools as soon as you can, since a Crude Hatchet and Crude Pickaxe will make obtaining trees and stones far easier than before. These can be made from your Pocket Crafting menu in the inventory screen, so do so as soon as you’re able to begin gathering sturdier resources that are better suited for use in building.

Your first base might not be that pretty, and that’s okay – your base just needs to be functional in keeping the monsters away and your extra stuff stashed in a safe location. If it’s getting dark and you’re not ready to fight through the night, you can always make a draft of a base using any raw materials you’ve got.

Who cares if the wood and stone are randomly placed when monsters emerge when the sun goes down? An ugly structure that keeps you alive is better than waiting for an aesthetically pleasing one while trying to fend off foes.

Before you can craft a Furniture Workbench to make a bed for yourself, you’ll need to wait out the nights, so doing that in an oddly-shaped small box made of Ash Wood and Dirt where you were is better than dying, having to trek back, and losing a good chunk of your stuff in the process?

Map Using Standard Resources, Then Upgrade As Possible

If you’ve got the prime location for the base you’re building in Hytale, but you’re not quite flush with resources yet, don’t worry about it for the moment. You’ll be doing plenty of adventuring that results in overloads of stones, woods, and ores, so worry about your structure first, then sort out the decoration after you’ve established yourself.

You’ll have access to plenty of ways to spruce up your space once it’s built, but there’s no use making elaborate dyed wools and colorful clay when you’re still trying to get by with Crude Tools and a raw material structure. You can always demolish an item with your pickaxe to remove its placement and get it back into your inventory, so feel free to change and upgrade your home in Hytale as you advance further into the world.

Build With What’s Already There

Building processed brick walls into raw stone to save on material when building an early base in Hytale.

In a pinch on that first day or two in a new game before you’ve gotten the lay of the land and know where you’d like to start your adventure, you might find yourself with limited access. If you’re really in a pinch and the sun is setting, try digging out a shelter in the natural terrain of your world to keep safe until the sunrise.

Are you near the entrance to a cave? Block off a lower portion to keep the monsters down there at bay, block the entrance you used all but entirely, and leave one space vacant so you can see the sunrise without worrying about being attacked. Out in a forest? Find trees with thick trunks, chop out part of the middle, and use that wood to wall off a section for yourself.

It might not be pretty, but it’ll get you through the night safely!

Place A Bed As Soon As You’ve Settled In

Interacting with a bed in Hytale.

When you first start playing Hytale, your spawn point by default is the temple where you wake up, and no matter how much base-building you’ve been doing someplace else, you’ll be sent back to that spot anytime you’re killed and need to respawn before you sleep in any bed to claim it as your own, which will set that bed as your spawn location.

Craft any of a handful of bed options from a Furniture Workbench and place one where you’d like to spawn, then sleep in it anytime after 7:30PM. Not only will sleeping through the night and into the following morning keep you safe from the monsters that spawn at night and are ready to fight if you’re traversing without sunlight, but having your spawn in your home is pivotal.

Even if you haven’t built the actual structure yet, placing a bed and sleeping in it will set your spawn to that location. Is it getting dark just as your find the perfect spot to set up a base game? Pop down your bed, sleep through the night, and get back to work right away in the morning once the sun takes care of the monsters.

The Building And Furniture Workbenches Are Your Friends

Crafting Hardwood building materials in Hytale.

When you’re ready to step up your decorating in Hytale, you’ll want to use the Builder’s Workbench to make construction materials of the raw stones and wood you’ve brought back to your base. This can be crafted from a regular Workbench and will provide access to an abundance of building materials in shapes and sizes.

Each kind of wood and stone will provide options for walls, roofing, fences, and possibly even some basic furniture. You can experiment to see which designs in what materials work best for your vision for your base building in Hytale. You’ll consistently unlock new recipes with new kinds of resources – Lightwood decor from Ash Wood looks different from Hardwood material made from Ash Wood, for instance – so be sure to check the Builder’s Workbench each time you return to base with new materials if you’re not settled yet on how it looks.

Once you’ve got the layouts planned and the walls built, it’s time to start filling the space! Not only should you be diligent in building every Workbench as soon as you’re able to begin maximizing your play with things like armors, weapons, and cooked meals, but you may also want to consider additional decorations for the space, too, which will come from the Furniture Workbench.

This allows you to craft goods of all kinds that serve a more decorative function in your space than a formative one to craft all manner of new goods or help you sleep through the night. Once you’ve got your basics covered and are fairly self-sufficient, you can build decorative furniture for your base in Hytale to make the house feel more like a home.

Your bed helps you sleep and your crates store your stuff, sure, but you can create decorative items of all kinds: lights to keep the space bright overnight, pottery and seasonal decor to give a fun flavor to your home, wools in assorted colors to bring some vibrance in, wooden walls with colored features for a fun pop, and so much more.

Pick A Convenient Location To Settle Permanently

Building a base near the Forgotten Temple Gateway.

While there’s not really a set end goal for Hytale before the Adventure game mode is added come the full launch of this early access hit, it’s generally not a bad idea to consider your location when settling a base, since you’ll want to be as central to what’s most important to your gameplay as you can be.

To upgrade your gear, you’ll need to begin accruing progressively tougher and tougher-to-find resources, so it’s not a bad idea to be near an entrance to an underground mine. There are plenty of these pockets around the overworld, so even if you’re not right next to one, you’re likely not far from plenty of improved resources just below your feet. Are you playing multiplayer and don’t want to share a house with your cohorts? Make sure there’s enough space before someone starts needing to do tons more demolition work than planned.

Where you settle should be decided based on what kind of gameplay you’re looking for, so explore the world a bit before you decide to start planting roots someplace, even if that means a night or two in the open or in a makeshift shelter.

Take Over An Existing Structure To Avoid Having To Build From Scratch

Finding an existing house with a monster outside in Hytale.

If you were the truly creative type of builder who wants to spend their time in Hytale building lavish structures from the ground up, you’d probably be playing in Creative mode, right? If you’re someone who’d rather just get out and go from the start and not delay your adventures for the sake of building, you can always set up shop in an abandoned building you find on your adventures.

There are tons of randomly-generated homes, ruins, villages, and more all around each world you create in Hytale, and you’d do well to explore everything you come across – who knows what kind of loot you can find, buy, or trade for while you’re there? And if you like where you’ve ended up, you can always use established structures either as-is or as base models for something you’d like to build.

Did you find a nice vacant home on your first venture from the starting spawn your very first day? If you’ve got a bed (or maybe you’ve even found a Furniture Workbench or materials inside to make one), then you can place it in any structure that isn’t already occupied without problem and effectively take over ownership. There’s already enough to keep you occupied in Hytale if you’re not a builder; use pre-made houses you’ve found in the world to your advantage!

Find Ways To Build Visual Interest

Even once you’ve built your Builder’s Workbench and found a wealth of different resources to use to craft building materials for your base in Hytale, though, doesn’t mean you need to just place blocks down and be done with it. If you’re looking to spice things up a bit with your base building efforts, you can do a number of things to intrigue with your build.

Did you make a ton of the same material to make your walls, and now you’re thinking that the unending wave of gray Cobblestone Bricks you made is a little boring? Rotate which way you’re placing blocks to try rotating the pattern, as a way to break up long stretches of the same pattern. Did you end up with lots of flowers as you were picking berry bushes, and you’ve got a Sheep or access to Clay nearby? Use colored wood or wool blocks as accents in your build.

Even inside, you’ll be able to continue the use of mixed materials. Once you’ve got unique spaces distinguished within your base, you can use different materials tactfully in conjunction in the same home, with a wood-focused Workbench and crafting area but stone in the living space where the beds and cooking stove are. There’s much more that can be done when building in Hytale than just popping down a square of stone bricks, placing a bed, and calling it a home – get creative and feel free to experiment!

Leave Space Outside For Farming

A plot with carrots growing and rabbit hutches in Hytale.

If you’ve been in combat at all – either with the monsters that spawn all around the overworld unless you’re playing in Creative Mode, with those waiting down in caves and dungeons for you to come along, or even other players if you’re into multiplayer with PVP – then you’ll know that food is critical to your survival in Hytale, so you may want to ensure that farming becomes a priority before long to help keep you well-fed on journeys down into the mines and dungeons of the game.

While you’ll have access to the earliest recipes in the game with just the berries and mushrooms you’ve been gathering around the overworld, you’ll find plenty of use for well-planned farming plots outside your base. You’ll need to take the time to water your crops after tilling soil and planting seeds, but you’ll have access to tons of new types of food in the process,

As such, you’ll want to plan space near your base to grow food in some way, be it setting up near an area rife with natural berry plants, near a plain suitable for tilling farm plots, or by natural animal spawns so you can have access to milk and eggs as needed. You can fence in areas to keep animals and monsters out, too.

Crop growing is pretty fleshed-out in the early access build, and a fuller animal farming mechanic will be coming in updates for Hytale.

Expand (Or Move) As Needed

The Wooden Walls category of the Furniture Workbench in Hytale.

Once you’ve got your initial space established, you might keep progressing in Hytale (especially as it continues through early access and into the full version) and find that your first base no longer suits your needs. Maybe your friends have gotten into the game and you don’t have enough space for everyone at your place. Maybe you’ve found a wealth of a new resource and want to make a new camp nearby. The good news about building in Hytale is, you can change your base as needed.

You’re not locked into any location in the Exploration mode of the game – that’s the whole point! If your initial base isn’t big enough for your anymore but you’re keen on where you’ve set up, you can always build new rooms onto existing bases to expand how much room you’ve got, provided the area you set up in initially has the space for you to do so.

Are you moving onto a new biome and don’t have access to teleportation yet, or you just want a change of scenery? You can always pocket what’s important at the moment and rebuild a new home elsewhere in the world. Sleep in bed in your new location to reset your spawn, and enjoy the new and improved home base!
