A week ago, we all stood in awe when Resident Evil Requiem reached 344,214 concurrent players on Steam, making it the most played Resident Evil title on Steam and among the top 10 most played primarily single-player titles ever on the platform.
A week later, Slay the Spire 2, the sequel to the hugely popular rougelike title, called my beer hold. That's because, after its marathon release date of just March 5, the indie title has become the 20th most played title by concurrent players on Steam.
Yes, you read that right.
With a whopping 526,793 concurrent players, all of which came in a little over 10 hours ago at the time of writing, Slay the Spire 2 is the 20th most played title on the platform. Its peak beat several other record-breaking titles, including Ark Raiders, as well as the aforementioned Resident Evil Requiem.
Steam Deck is the first of many RAM shortage tragedies in video games
Valve's handheld is currently out of stock due to RAM and memory shortages.
It is extremely important to note that this is an Early Access title, meaning the final product has not been delivered. However, that hasn't stopped players from showing up at the drive-thru to play the game.
At $24.99 USD for the title, all prices remain relatively the same across regions, this is over $12 million for developer Mega Crit. Again – and we can't stress this enough – the game is only 48 hours old.
The marathon, meanwhile, has yet to meet its original peak
That Slay the Spire 2 was able to double the number of concurrent players it had well after its release. Because, on the other side of the coin, Marathon still hasn't matched the 88,387 it peaked at on PC.
Right now, there are 73,045 runners in the marathon, by no means a small count. Its 24-hour peak is 78,498. However, both of those figures are less than 10,000 players down from its 88,337 peak, at least on Steam.
Basically, Mega Crit had some funny words for Bungie on social media when it became increasingly clear that Slay the Spire 2 was more popular than the marathon. However, those barbs were 177,181 players who engaged in Slay the Spire 2 versus the aforementioned 88,337 for the marathon.
No one could have predicted that Slay the Spire 2 would add millions to that amount to top half a million peaks and enter some rare Steam territory. But that's exactly what happened. Momentum is a serious thing and Slay the Spire 2 has it in spades.
