Counter-Strike 2 reloads will now discard any ammo in the mag

We've all done it in every game that allows it. If you don't, you're probably lying. Reloading even when you miss a round from your mag is a habit that every gamer has picked up from early shooters. This is something we do unconsciously, as most games offer us unlimited, almost magical rounds. However, you will no longer be able to do this in Counter-Strike 2.

In last night's update, Valve dramatically changed the way reloads work, moving away from the usual shooter formula to a more realistic approach, seen in the likes of survival games and Helldivers 2. Considering how long fans have been used to things, it's going to take some getting used to.

Counter-Strike 2 changes the reloading method

“When you reload in CS2, the remaining ammo in your magazine is thrown back into an essentially endless reserve supply,” Valve's blog post says. “And so the decision to reload has never offered a significant trade-off—in a safe position with enough time, you can reload after firing a single bullet, or half a mag, or an empty, and the rest of the round will be unaffected.”

Until yesterday, reloading wasn't something you had to think too much about. Players will automatically reload every time they stop shooting, making it something you don't have to think too much about. However, to make things a little more realistic and stressful, you now have to decide when to reload, and if it's worth sacrificing the rounds in your current mag, rather than “loading your weapon up with a few bullets”.

What happened to Counter-Strike 2 in the market?

Last month, the CS2 market crashed, dropping $2.5 billion in value; We'll unpack what happened and why it's already recovering.

Thankfully, this change also comes with some compensation in the number of mags for different guns. “How many reserve mags will each weapon have? Most get three clip fill-ups, but some weapons will have fewer to reward efficiency and accuracy or more to encourage spamming through walls and smoke. Keep an eye on your reserve supply,” says Valve.

It's a significant change from what we've been used to for years, but it adds an extra layer of strategic decision-making to the game.
