This statement is music to Astarion fans' ears. In the time since Baldur's Gate 3'In the last patch, fans have flocked to forums and fandom spaces wanting official content confirming that Pale Elf still thrives. A return to the role will shake up those corners of the web. But before those fans get too excited to see the beloved actor embrace the role, Newbone is clear about the boundaries he's set around the casting. He is an actor who portrayed Astarion, not an “Astarion actor”.

If there's one thing Newbone has made clear, it's that he's not interested in playing watered-down versions of the same character over and over again. In an interview with FRVR, he explained:
“I've definitely avoided some roles recently, because they were bad projects or something (…) they want the Astarion thing (…) I don't really want to do that again. It's too close to a character I've already done, I don't think I can offer anything interesting for this particular character. 'This character is like Astarion!'

Newbon's recent and upcoming projects make it clear that his career is transforming into a talent. But despite this incredible lineup and the inevitable unannounced projects we don't know about yet, there's still a deep love and appreciation for Astarion and the impact he's had on Newbon's acting career. Therefore, a reprise of this role is not out of the question. In an interview with Nerdist, Newbon said:
“I would love to keep playing (Astarion) in different things. I don't get to choose that. But one thing I want to do is play him live-action (…) I look like him, which is very helpful.”
With Craig Mazin Baldur's Gate 3 A series in development with HBO, Astarion's return could potentially coincide with Newbon's wishes. This is one of the rare cases where casting continuity would not only be fan service, but it would make creative sense. And in these circumstances, returning to the role would be a welcome alternative to chasing typecasts.
The Bowie approach
In an interview with The Escapist, Newbone named the inspirations that fueled Astarion's theatricality. Giles Foreman, Rueben Kaye, Arlecchino, commedia dell'arte, a stray cat who wanders into Newbon's garden—there is no shortage of sources of performance. And yet, it seems that inspiration doesn't limit itself to the roles Newbone plays but extends to his career as well.
The FRVR conversation quoted above rejects boxing. In the same interview, Newbon cited David Bowie as a creative influence: “Bowie is an artist who completely reinvented himself. I think he understood that extreme repetition creates stagnation as an artist.” This philosophy explains a lot about how he is navigating the post-Baldur's Gate 3 Success.
Newbon stated in a conversation with GameRant that playing Astarion was a risk. And any role any actor takes on involves risk: from Astarion Dungeons and DragonsThere is Vecna. However, the biggest risk may be stability. Instead of pursuing what worked, he's stepping aside, believing that success comes in many forms.

Baldur's Gate 3 gave Newbon a defined role, not a limited one
It would be easy for Newbon to bend all the way to Astarion and ride that vampiric wave wherever it goes. There is no shortage of fans lining up for this. But there is something very impressive about not choosing.
The truth is that Astarion has nothing to lose by keeping Newbone away from imitators. It actually preserves what made the show special in the first place. This prevents it from getting diluted. Works because of his writing on Astarion BG3His contradictions, and his arc. To relegate it to “sarcastic vampire with charm” is to cheapen that effect.
If Newbon returns to the role — whether it be in live-action, Baldur's Gate 4Or something else entirely – it will feel earned because the moment called for it. And if he doesn't? What a privilege we fans have: to witness the momentous career of an inspired actor who will inevitably give us more characters to fall in love with.
