Some PS5 consoles get hit with yet another price hike

Players interested in buying a PlayStation 5 Recently received some bad news, as the prices of two refurbished units have now increased. PlayStation 5 fans will have to spend about $100 extra if they're willing to buy multiple models of the refurbished console.

Right now is not an easy time to be a gamer looking to buy a console or PC. AI data centers have created a demand for parts that has ensured that the cost of components like RAM and CPUs have risen, driving up the price of everything from building PCs to buying consoles. So far, these trends show no signs of dying, which may have prompted some players to consider buying used or refurbished systems. Unfortunately, though, they are now very expensive, at least if one is interested in a Sony system.

From JRPGs to platformers, racing, and open-world titles, here are all the big new PS5 games releasing in 2026 and beyond.

Refurbished PlayStation 5 prices increase

As seen on May 1st, the cost of a refurbished PlayStation 5 Slim has now gone up. Previously, one could get a refurbished PS5 Slim with a disc drive for $449.99, or a digital-only version for $399.99. These consoles were at a substantial discount on buying brand-new, which made them enticing to gamers. But, now, both have seen their prices increase by $100, bringing the PS5 Slim with the disc to $549.99, while the digital-only version sells for $499.99. Both units have a 1TB SSD, and ship with all necessary cables, a single wireless DualSense controller, and a manual, but may have minor cosmetic flaws.

While getting a refurbished PlayStation 5 is still less expensive than buying a new one, that's not much of a comfort for those trying to game on a budget. In April, Sony raised the price of the PS5, seeing the brand-new consoles cost $649.99 with a disc drive for the standard PS5, the digital edition PS5 cost $599.99, and the PS5 Pro increased its price to $899.99. It stings even more when you consider that the PlayStation 5 launched in 2020 at $499.99 with a disc drive and $449.99 without it.

Thankfully, there's still an option that's a little more affordable and hasn't yet been affected by the recent price hike. A refurbished original PS5 model with a disc drive is still available for $399.00. This makes it the most affordable version of the system, though it ships with 825GB of storage rather than the Slim's 1TB. Gamers who have put off buying a system will want to get in on the opportunity before it's too late.

Sony has recently seen huge success with the PlayStation 5, with the console managing to outsell the new Nintendo Switch 2 for most of 2026. The PlayStation also experienced a spike in sales between late March and early April, although it is believed that this was due to consumers trying to purchase one before the price went up. Now that the cost of both brand-new and refurbished units (sans refurbished original PS5 models) have seen their prices rise, it will be interesting to see if Sony can maintain its trend of outselling its competitors.
