While character progression is important, some of the game's best content is found simply by going off established paths and exploring interesting landmarks, especially when there's an outside faction involved.
Part of why I love the game so much is because of the number of possibilities that come from even the smallest of landmarks. A remote settlement or abandoned building can open the door to larger narrative developments that significantly affect the wider world, and I'd rather see the story expand and branch out because of my actions than for my character to have some boring old experiences.
