In the early years of the game, development was limited to corporations with large budgets due to the equipment required. However, over time, the tools needed to make games have become more accessible, which has led to a ton of impressive titles created by small teams. Mecha Chameleon and Viewfinder.
Over the past few years, indie games have become as much a part of the industry as the big triple-A titles, and it's no stretch to say that some of them have even surpassed the popularity of triple-A titles. Thankfully, these games are also affordable due to their small budgets, so here are some of the best options that you should definitely try.

Mecha Chameleon
- Release Date: June 10, 2026
- Developer: Lemurian
Arguably, starting with one of the biggest indie hits of 2026, Meccha Chameleon has shown that if a game is fun and unique, it can reach the masses with very little marketing. The game reached a peak of 340,000 players on Steam, something that even most triple-A titles have not achieved in the current state of gaming.
The game is a unique take on the prophunt-esque genre where, instead of being an object to hide, you remain as a stick figure that you can draw on yourself. You have to find creative places where you can put certain emotions and colors on your body to blend in with the environment and avoid the hunter's gun.

peak
- Release Date: June 16, 2025
- Developer: Team PEAK
Peak is a slang word used to describe something big, so it's very appropriate to have this mountain climbing game as its title. Along with great humor as a development team, this game also shows that some simple tasks like scaling a mountain can be fun if you add enough hostility to the environment.
This is a round-based game where each round starts with your plane crashing on the beach. You are trapped, and to get out, you need to reach the top of the nearest mountain to call for help. In doing so, you must adventure through four ever-changing biomes, and as the mountain changes every 24 hours no two games will be the same.

Deadly Company
- Release Date: October 24, 2023
- Developer: Zeekers
There are plenty of co-op dungeon raiding games on the market at the moment, but Lethal Company was the first to set the precedent for such games. Before its release, the general idea of dungeon raiding was to go with a sword or gun in your hand and destroy everything in your path.
However, this game puts you in a very vulnerable position where you cannot defeat most of the monsters you encounter. Instead, the focus is on survival as you constantly manage your inventory and bring out as much high-level loot as possible. In most cases though, you will probably be kidnapped or killed by the monster.

Burglin' Gnomes
- Release Date: June 10, 2026
- Developer: Fobri
While most of the games on this list are great fun in a group, they can still be played by yourself, but the same can't be said for Burglin' Gnomes as your size is a little small to make a difference on your own. However, once you get a group of gnomes together, you know they have the power to do anything you want, including shooting guns.
Burglin' Gnomes lets you constantly attack houses as gnomes and steal items. However, it won't be that simple as you'll be up against an old man who hates gnomes and will either shoot you or put you inside his microwave at the first chance he gets. Even if the old man is defeated, the house will be filled with danger as he loots.

Stardew Valley
- Release Date: February 26, 2016
- Developer: Anxious app
If you have been in the gaming field for a while, there is a high chance that you already know Stardew Valley as it is the most recommended game in the casual genre. Released almost a decade ago, this game starts you on a farm with nothing, and lets you build your own empire over time.
In the beginning, you start by planting and growing your crops. As you progress through the gameplay, you can fish, mine, cut down trees, and even participate in a bunch of events with the villagers. Even with so much content, this game doesn't feel pressured and lets you play at your own pace, making it a great choice for everyone.
5
Viewfinder
- Release Date: July 18, 2023
- Developer: Sad Owl Studio
Perspective can make a big difference, when it comes to problems in real life and in this game. Viewfinder is a unique take on photography where you learn how much progress you can make if you change your perspective on things. To put it simply, you have to get through a map full of puzzles.
However, these are not your usual puzzles where the room closes behind you and you have to find a key to escape. Instead, it constantly blocks your path forward with large gaps in the map, and if you want to go past, you have to adjust your perspective and defy all the principles you know.

Hollow Knight
- Release Date: February 24, 2017
- Developer: Team Cherry
Although many indie games create a sensation in gaming, you can still tell that they are indie at a glance. The same cannot be said for both Hollow Knight and its sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong. There have been many platformers in the industry over the years, but nothing quite like this one.
Hollow Knight is a beautiful game where you play as a bug and interact with many other bugs on your journey. The strangest part about it is that most of the story is left for the players to discover in alternate paths. When you play this game, you won't be bored even for a second as each biome offers a huge range of enemies and platforming puzzles.
3
Terraria
- Release Date: 16 May 2011
- Developer: Re-argument
Terraria has been a very controversial game since its release, with some players calling it mediocre and others calling it one of the greatest innovations in gaming, and surprisingly, both of these may be true. This game is a very difficult early game because it doesn't spoon-feed you anything, which can make it look worse than it is.
However, when you get past the initial game or ease it through some mods, you will realize the true beauty of this exploration game where you can reach limits that you never expected. For a 2D digging game, you'll be surprised how many hours you can spend in Terraria once you're hooked.
2
Phasmophobia
- Release Date: September 18, 2020
- Developer: Kinetic Games
What would a list of indie games be without ghost hunting in it? Released ahead of its time, Phasmophobia is the perfect game if you're looking to play something scary while choosing a game that will give you hours of play time. Even after over 200 hours in the game, I feel like I still have a lot to learn from it.
In Phasmophobia, you enter various maps with your ghost-hunting equipment, and you're up against one of many types of ghosts. Each has its own unique abilities, and you have to figure out which ghost you're up against by finding three pieces of evidence or paying attention to its actions and movements.

Palworld
- Release Date: January 19, 2024
- Developer: Pocket pair
Finally, one of the biggest and most widely loved entries in the indie space, peaking at over 2 million players during its release, Palworld is a creature-hunting game that has gone through its fair share of issues with Pokemon. Once you start playing it, you're bound to get hundreds of hours of playtime, and it's also coming out of early access on July 10, 2026, with a bunch of new content and improvements. If you want a game that will take your whole life for a good few days, Palworld is a great choice at this time.
