Star Trek Magic: The Gathering The set may still be some time away from launch, but we had an exciting weekly MTG live stream that revealed details about the set, including first-ever signed cards and four new Commander precons.
These Universes Beyond prequels all look very exciting and are well-themed based on the show's main characters and factions, so let me break down everything we know about these four new prequels, including color identification and pricing.
What are the four Star Trek Commander decks?
The four Star Trek Commander decks bear the following names and color identities:
- Federation Fleet – Jeskai (Blue, White, Red)
- Landing Party – Band (Green, White, Blue)
- Klingon Fury – Mardu (Red, White, Black)
- We Are The Borg – Esper (White, Blue, Black)
We can make a fairly simple assumption based on the box art that the character is going to be the main commander for each deck, but it's worth noting that each box only has one character, when most of the ones pictured also represent a backup commander for each faction.
Federation Fleet
This deck will be led by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and will rely heavily on card draw and vehicle cards. Star Trek is expected to lean heavily on the station mechanic introduced in Edge of Eternities, so you'll be powering up space stations to turn them into powerful creatures.
To do this, you need to have creatures in play, be they permanents or tokens, so while card draw and stations are the primary mechanics, you still need to make sure you have ways to play creatures and protect them to charge your space stations.
landing party
This deck is led by Spock, and the mechanic will return to Landfall and “Strange New Worlds”. This second mechanic isn't entirely clear based on what's been revealed from the set so far, but it could refer to artifacts or spell cards bearing the names of planets throughout Star Trek history. A much more unlikely possibility is the return of battle cards, but this will be Theming fits if handled correctly.
Klingon Fury
we learned a lot During the MTG weekly stream we have Klingon Commander Prikon led by Worf with a little, actual context about the Klingons.
Mechanically, this deck looks like it will be all-out aggressive at the table, similar to Marvel Super Heroes' Avengers Assemble deck. I'm expecting a creature-heavy deck list and spells all built around damage or creature power buffing.
We are the Borg
Finally, we have a Borg deck led by the Borg Queen. Based on the Borg cards we've seen so far, it's fair to assume that Assimilation will play a big role in this deck. This mechanic appears to interact with other players' graveyards and bring creatures onto the battlefield under your control, only as Borg instead of their previous type.
How Much Will Star Trek Commander Preconceives Cost?
Considering that Star Trek is a Universe Beyond set, the base prices for each product are slightly higher. This is allegedly to cover the additional cost of licensing each UB set. It means this The Star Trek Commander Prokon deck will cost $74.99 each for the base edition and $159.99 for the collector's edition.Each card features a serge foil finish.
