EA Sports FC and NBA $150 editions topped the pre-order charts

Despite being quite expensive for annual releases, the $150 final versions of EA Sports FC 27 and NBA 2K27 are already topping the pre-order charts.

As anyone who has researched RAM knows, gaming has turned into a very expensive hobby over the past couple of years. The rising cost of game development, technology, and hardware components has hit our industry particularly hard, resulting in consumers paying extra for controllers, consoles, subscriptions, and oh so much more.

It wasn't that long ago when we were all mad at Nintendo for introducing $80 games with the Switch 2, but that's sadly become the norm for triple-A releases. EA and Take-Two apparently thought we weren't shelling out enough, as they recently announced $150 versions for EA Sports FC and NBA 2K27 that unfortunately seem to be doing very well.

Don't be surprised if other publishers follow suit

Earlier this week, the revelations of NBA 2K27 and EA Sports FC 2027 came with a nasty surprise that both had premium versions that cost $150. EA Sports FC's Ultimate Plus Edition comes with 10,000 FC Points and a 5-Season Premium Pass, while NBA's Ultra Edition includes 35,000 VC, a Season 1 Pro Pass, and a Summer Season Pass Pro Pass bundle.

Considering all the fuss about GTA 6's price, you'd think these expensive versions would struggle, but that's not the case. On the US PlayStation Store pre-order chart, NBA Ultra Edition is in second place, while EA Sports FC is in third place. In the UK store, EA Sports' Ultimate Plus Edition is actually ahead of GTA 6 in first place.

The standard versions of both games are far down the chart, suggesting that many players are opting for the most expensive version.

It's not just the PlayStation Store, but on both the UK and US Xbox storefronts the Ultra Edition of NBA 2K27 ranks third in the charts, behind the Premium Editions of Modern Warfare 4 and GTA 6. The $150 price tag obviously won't turn off many players, and in fact seems to be the preferred option overall.

It's not too surprising considering how dedicated and bought-in the audience is for these games, the instant success and acceptance of the $150 versions is a scary addition to an industry that's already very expensive.
