With “pilgrimage” points in Japan and interesting destinations for fans of Japanese anime, manga, games, and movies, there is no shortage of places for otaku to visit when visiting the country. While Tokyo and Osaka may be the first places you think of when planning a trip to Japan, there are many places outside of those big cities that have something special to offer. One such landmark has recently been revealed near the foot of Saga Prefecture's main island, far from Japan's most famous cities.
As part of a campaign to promote tourism, Saga Prefecture unveiled a new Godzilla A mural in an unlikely place – next to a dam. How the graffiti was done is even more interesting, because it wasn't done with paint or any other simple means. The mural was revealed on November 22 as part of the “SagaPrize” tourism campaign, announced on the X (formerly Twitter) account and website of the company that created the mural, SagaPrize and Saga Prefecture's official websites.

Japan's newest tribute to Godzilla
A king of monsters like you've never seen him
Japan has no shortage of Godzilla tributes and merchandise, with the king of monsters, theme parks, mosaics, and entire stories dedicated to a life-size statue of his head in Tokyo. And why not? Godzilla is one of Japan's most famous characters, with an international reputation that rivals even Pikachu and Hello Kitty. Godzilla has been around since 1954 when he first arrived on the scene, created by Toho Studios, and has never lost his popularity both domestically and abroad.
Now, Godzilla has a whole new landmark for fans to go and see, and it's larger than life. This new Godzilla mural is next to the Iwayagawauchi Dam in Saga Prefecture. It was created by the pressure washer company Kercher, which had reportedly been planning the mural since sometime in July. Work on the mural began on November 4, 2024, and the final piece was revealed on November 22. It was created by a team of 7 people, who used 2,400 point markers to create the design.
This unique mural was not created with paint, but was actually created by pressure on the side of the dam. Not only is it an interesting way to create a work of art, it's also a great advertisement for Kercher's pressure washing capabilities. In full, the post on Karcher's X account translates to:
Godzilla vs. Saga “Godzilla in Saga Dam Art Project Powered by Karcher.” A super giant “Godzilla” appears at the dam of Saga Prefecture! The Iwagwauchi Dam, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, will be used as the canvas for a spectacular dam art project.
The project, which started on Monday to clean the waste from the dam and build a magnificent Godzilla artwork, has completed about four months of preparation. , and completed on Friday November 22nd 🙌.
The most important part of the dam art production was faithfully reproducing the design on the giant dam wall, and this time, the artist focused on expressing the details of Godzilla, which was much better than the previous designs done abroad. Precise point markings, edges, and a delicate and dynamic cleaning process. The artist has taken great care to depict a powerful Godzilla that looks like it's about to move, taking full advantage of the dam's features.
Since it is a work of art that utilizes the natural environment, dam art can only be viewed in its natural state. Why not visit Iwaguchi Dam to see this work of art that can only be seen now!
The only downside is that no one is sure how long Godzilla will last in the dam, as it will be determined by “natural conditions”.
