A Work Desk That’s Also A Gaming Desk

When your 10-year-old is both a serious gamer and homeschooled, their desk basically becomes mission control. My son spends most of his day there — gaming, learning, building in Minecraft, and occasionally pretending to do math while watching YouTube on his second screen.

I wanted something that could keep up with that lifestyle: durable, comfortable, customizable, and (let’s be honest) cool enough to make him feel like a pro streamer in training. That’s what led me to the Uplift V3 Standing Desk. Because of space considerations, I chose the 48″ by 30″ version in Black Bamboo with a matching drawer, RGB monitor arm, pop-up power grommet, and a few extra add-ons. It’s worth noting that smaller 42″ and larger 60″, 72″ and 80″ versions are also available.

After doing a deep dive into reviews and upgrade notes, I found that the V3 was designed to address most of the V2’s weak spots that actually led me away from Uplift the last time I needed a desk for personal use. The improvements include better stability, smoother motors, and a wider height range, which we’ll get into momentarily. And after setting it up, I can confirm: it’s a desk that genuinely lives up to the hype.

What’s New in the V3 — And Why It Matters

Uplift V3 Desk

I previously used the Uplift V2 desk in an office setting where I regularly sat and stood for long periods of time, and it’s clear that Uplift made some smart improvements with the V3. The biggest upgrade is stability — the new model uses redesigned feet and thicker base segments that reduce wobble dramatically, even when the desk is at full height.

My son’s mid-sized desktop tower sits on his desk, and his large monitor is attached to Uplift’s available RGB-supported single monitor stand. These items have a significant amount of weight that could easily sway under their own design with most desks. However, the Uplift V3 design lives up to its promise, delivering an excellent non-sway surface to work on even when the desk is fully extended. I would say just as significant is the lack of bounce on my son’s monitor when he’s typing or gaming. We’ll get into the monitor stand in a little while because it’s an essential component of avoiding a shaky monitor as well.

The 3-stage lift system is a big win for the Uplift V3 stand desk, which now has a much wider adjustment range, making it suitable for both kids and adults. My son (just 4 feet tall) can comfortably sit for schoolwork, and even he needs to raise it slightly higher off the ground because it can be lowered so much, while I can raise it high enough for my 5’10” frame to work while standing.

Speaking of moving the desk up and down, the motors are also noticeably quieter and smoother compared to the V2 version of the desk, which is great when you’re in the same room all day and don’t want the sound of gears interrupting lessons or late-night gaming sessions.

Uplift also kept the C-frame and T-frame options, so you can prioritize legroom or aesthetics, and they retained the tool-free accessory mounting system, which is one of their best design ideas. From headphone hooks to cup holders, almost everything attaches easily without extra drilling.

Setup Is Surprisingly Simple

Uplift Center Attachment for Desk

Assembling the desk was refreshingly straightforward. It took me about 30 minutes total, including unboxing. Uplift provides a main bottom-of-desk support rail that spans nearly the entire width of the underside. This rail doesn’t just serve as structural reinforcement — it also houses the power unit and includes the slot for the optional Bluetooth adapter, which we’ll talk about in a bit.

The rail attaches cleanly into pre-arranged mounting spots using metal-based screw holes, creating a firm, lasting connection that prevents loosening over time. With a 15-year warranty, it’s clear Uplift engineered this frame for longevity — and this rail system is a big part of that.

You can also install the height-adjusting control pad on either the left or right side, which is a small but incredibly thoughtful touch. My son preferred it on the left side since he’s left-handed.

Soft Roll Caster Wheels

Soft Castor Wheels

The Uplift V3 standing desk ships with standard stationary legs. The room where my kids do all of their school work and play video games currently has a Berber carpet that is about to be replaced with new wood flooring. I wasn’t sure how well the Uplift soft roll caster wheels would work with the current flooring, but I knew it wouldn’t be long until the wood floor would allow the desk to be moved easily for cleaning and occasional rearranging of the room. The wheels only took a few minutes to install with the use of a wrench, and once installed, I was surprised by how easily the desk moved, even across a carpeted area. I’ve moved the desk several times to take pictures and to add more power options, and I haven’t had a single issue with rolling the unit, even with around 50 pounds of weight on the desk.

The wheels feature locks, so your desk doesn’t roll during use, and those locks are simple to engage and disengage with the flip of a standard locking mechanism.

Overall, I wouldn’t say they are the highest quality caster wheels I’ve reviewed, but they get the job done, and I have no doubt they will hold up over time.

The Black Bamboo Surface — Smooth, Durable, and Gorgeous

Black Bamboo Desktop for Uplift V3 Desk

Let’s talk about the Black Bamboo desktop, because this finish is an absolute standout. It’s sleek, smooth, and soft to the touch, with rounded edges that make long sessions more comfortable. It has that high-end, matte-meets-natural aesthetic that blends beautifully in a modern gaming setup. I’m not a fan of laminate desktops, which tend not to have the same durability as a wood surface, and I absolutely think paying $150 more for the bamboo surface is well worth the added cost.

It’s also more durable than I expected — fingerprints and smudges are far less noticeable than on darker laminates. For a homeschool-meets-gaming desk that sees constant use, that’s a big win.

The Advanced RGB Gaming Keypad Is A Nice Touch

RGB Keypad for Uplift V3 Standing Desk

There are six different keypads to choose from with the Uplift V3 standing desk, but when you’re a gamer, and you understand that RGB matters (because… science?), there’s really only one choice: the advanced RGB gaming keypad. This option (pictured above) comes with RGB and keys that look like they were stolen off a Corsair keyboard with a similar clicky feedback loop.

The keypad is very simple to operate, with up and down arrows to adjust the desk’s height, and two modes that can be programmed using the 1 and 2 keys. Set your sitting height, press the “M” key, and then choose settings 1 or 2. Then, select your standing height and use the M key again to set that height. Once you’ve completed that simple process, the simple press of either button sets your chosen ideal height.

It took me a few minutes to figure out the light button, but essentially, you can press that button, then cycle through light options using the up arrow. Once you find the setting you want, press the “M” key to set that option. I’m still getting my son into the habit of turning off his RGB lights at night but that’s probably a losing battle.

My one complaint is that my son has already bumped into the keypad multiple times in just over a week. I can see a time when the keypad is damaged because it protrudes from and sits under the desk.

There’s some good news in our house, though, as I installed the optional Bluetooth adapter and installed the Uplift app on my son’s phone. He can now control his desk remotely over Bluetooth. The Bluetooth adapter is $39 at the time of publishing, and it comes with QR code stickers you can place on the side of the Bluetooth adapter to ensure you can quickly install the device on other smartphones in the future. So far, the Bluetooth adapter has worked flawlessly, and it took about 10 seconds to install, thanks to a dedicated port located below the desk’s surface.

Domain RGB Single Monitor Arm

Domain RGB Single Monitor Stand-1

The RGB monitor arm is where the desk really earns gamer cred. It hides cables, moves fluidly, and features a capacitive touch button that cycles through 20 different light patterns. It took me a second to realize you have to hold the button for three seconds to power it on or off, and at first, I thought something wasn’t set up correctly. A capacitive button is far less likely to wear down over time, and when you’re dealing with a desk that has a 15-year warranty, that’s precisely what you want in an add-on device.

The Domain RGB single monitor arm’s LED lights are bright, customizable, and a total hit with my kid, who loves flashy gear.

Uplift builds this arm to support monitors from 4.4 to 19.8 pounds, which means a wide range of monitors will fit. The monitor pictured above is my son’s 24-inch display. It also features a swivel range of +/-90° and a tilt range of +/-80°, which makes it easy to maneuver as desired between sitting and standing positions to match your point of view. Remember, it’s best to center your monitors with the middle of your screen at eye level. This monitor arm moves easily and maintains its position once you have your monitor in its desired position.

The arm has standard pneumatics and adjustment hex screens that can be tightened and loosened with an included hex screw wrench. While the stand is sturdy, my son, who is still on the shorter side, has no problem moving the arms around. He constantly moves his monitor between his gaming position, computer work position, and standing position, and there is absolutely no give in the arm.

The Domain RGB single monitor arm also has a nice hidden cable management system that also fits my son’s DisplayPort, monitor power cable, and webcam wires, both at the top and bottom of the mount. The cable management adds to the overall “wire-free” view for the desk.

The Bamboo Drawer — Customizable and Solid, But Old-School

Bamboo Drawer for Uplift V3 Desk

The add-on bamboo drawer matches the desktop perfectly and feels sturdy once installed. Unlike most of the desk’s components, though, it doesn’t come with pre-drilled mounting holes. That gives you freedom to install it on either the left or right side, depending on your preference, but it does mean you’ll need to break out a drill and make pilot holes yourself.

Pro tip: install the drawer before setting the desk upright. Doing it while it’s lying flat will save you some frustration.

The drawer’s biggest flaw is the lack of rails — it slides on wood-to-wood contact, which means it can feel a little stiff and will probably wear slightly over time. Still, it looks great, feels solid, and gives the desk a nice, finished touch.

Power Grommets and Cable Management

Uplift Desk Popup Power Adapter

I went with one standard grommet on the left and a pop-up power grommet on the right. The pop-up design is awesome — press down, and it slowly springs up to reveal outlets and USB ports. My son uses it to power his RGB monitor stand and charge controllers. The power grommet is very sturdy, held in place by a simple screw-in adapter that is hidden under the desk. I strongly recommend installing one of the adapters behind your desktop if you plan on having your PC sitting on your desk. I plugged the powered grommet directly into my desk-attached surge protector, providing surge protection and easy access to power for desktop-related devices.

The only hiccup is spacing. If you add multiple power grommets and use Uplift’s metal bracket to install your surge protector, some outlets can get blocked. Speaking of power, the 8-plug surge strip is great, but two ports end up hidden behind the cable management mounting plate if you purchase that option. Once you’re aware of it, though, it’s easy to plan around that flaw by either screwing your power adapter into the desk’s bottom so it faces down, or by using a smaller 4-plug option.

Accessory Highlights — Uplift Desks And Beyond!

There are a ton of accessories that can be used with your Uplift V3 standing desk that range from a cupholder and punching bag to privacy panels and desk organizers. The best part about many of these accessories is that they can be easily added to almost any desk! Here are a few of the upgrades that stayed on my son’s desk and a few that ended up being distributed to other desks in our household.

Cable Management Panel

Cable Management

As noted earlier, there is a cable management panel that can be installed under the desk (pictured above). It’s an easy-to-use option that does a good job of hiding cables. You can see that I have installed the cable panel in the highest position, allowing for more space under my desk. If you have a lot of cables running inside that panel, you can increase the depth, allowing for more space for storage. Truth be told, you can shove a ton of cables in the setup I chose. While you can’t see them, I have cables for my speakers, desktop, monitor, and 10 feet of power grommet cable running inside the adapter, and there is still a ton of available space.

If there’s one complaint I have about this option, it’s that the way the brackets are placed means you can’t use an 8-outlet power adapter when mounted to the desk’s built-in metal bracket. If you’re willing to screw the surge protector into the bottom of your desk surface, though, that’s not really of concern. I’m not a fan of creating extra work for myself, so I chose the 4-port adapter. While that size worked, I noticed that you can’t even use that option if you want to install a powered grommet because the grommet is so large and ends up blocking two of the ports on any adapter installed with the included bracket installation option.

I do think Uplift could do a better job of how power management is handled for installed surge protectors. Still, given that there are alternate mounting options if you don’t mind screwing into your desk, there’s at least a suitable secondary option.

Once installed, the cable management system does its job beautifully. No cords dangle, no clutter under the desk — it’s tidy, gamer-approved, and parent-approved.

Headphone Stand

Headphone Stand

The metal-and-bamboo headphone stand is simple, classy, and sturdy. When I first set it up, I thought, “Well, this is a bit ridiculous,” even though I thought the wood was very high quality. However, once I put a pair of headphones on the stand, I realized it was actually a very functional and “executive-looking” stand. The wood is beautiful, and the stand is hefty, ensuring that my expensive gaming headphones stay in place.

I ended up keeping the headphone stand for my own setup because it looks more like professional desk decor than gaming gear. My kids’ RGB headphone stands might be louder, but this one feels and looks way professional.

Clamp-On Power Adapter

Uplift Clamp-On Power Adapter

The clamp-on power adapter is another favorite of mine. It fits snugly, has a bamboo accent for style continuity, and works with a range of desk thicknesses. It’s portable too — I’ve already swapped it between desks a few times, and it now sits next to the new gaming rig I built two weeks ago. I use it as a “side of desk” power option so I can quickly charge my iPhone and tablets. The USB-C adapters have a 65W max output, which is great for quickly charging smartphones, tablets, and other USB-supported devices.

The wood accent you see in the pictures is also removable if you want to have a solid black design instead of the wood finish.

Punching Bag Attachment

Punching Bag Attachment For Uplift Desk V3

Yes, there’s a desk-mounted punching bag — and it’s my son’s absolute favorite add-on. It’s basically the grown-up version of a fidget toy. He bops it between matches, and when he needs to take a moment away from his school work to clear his head. Admittedly, that means there are a bunch of metal spring noises coming from his general direction, but in general, it’s a weird, but actually kind of cool addition.

And for anyone who might be curious, you can punch the bag pretty darn hard, and it won’t shift at all. It also has a soft surface for the top side of the desk, meaning it shouldn’t scratch up or cause any other type of damage to your desk — but I offer no guarantees for that claim.

Cup Holder Attachment

Uplift V3 Cup Holder

The cup holder offered by Uplift is excellent for several reasons. First, it means you can store your coffee mug or thermos without taking up desk space. Second, with its decided cage design, your drinks are secure, and that means the likelihood of floor spills is nearly non-existent.

I’ll admit I’ve ruined a few keyboards and one MacBook Pro thanks to my own clumsiness, so when this clamp arrived, I tested it on the Uplift V3 standing desk, and then I took it for my own use. The holder uses a simple clamp design, which means you can install it on various surfaces. I use it with my metal desk, and I even tested it on our dining room table, realizing that with four children at home, this might be an add-on parents want to use with their toddlers or other young children.

Just like the Uplift desk, it’s a solidly built product that is easy to install (and uninstall), and it offers practical yet straightforward functionality.

A Desk Organizer To Use As You See Fit

Desk Organizer

I requested the desk organizer from Uplift because my son’s desk quickly becomes a mess. The wood organizer features various wood boxes that can be combined (as seen above) or placed around the desk for various uses. My son uses this organizer to store his headphone charger cable, 3.5mm headphone jack, pens, and other desk-based accessories.

The organizer doesn’t take up that much space and also features a pen holder and a wooden smartphone holder (not pictured). The only part of the organizer my son decided not to use was the phone holder, solely because his case was too thick to fit inside the holder.

Uplift also offers a bottle opener, but our kids aren’t allowed to have drinks at their desk, and they have little reason to have bottle openers, so I saved myself the hassle of installing the one that was sent my way. With that being said, it’s a solid metal opener that easily attaches to the bottom of any desk with just a few screws, making it a worthwhile addition if you open a lot of bottles at your desk.

If there is one option I would have loved to try, it’s the under-desk hammock. However, that option requires at least a 72″ wide desk. Admittedly, I have no practical use for a hammock under my desk, but I’m sure my four children would love it.

Real-World Performance

The desk’s motors are quiet, consistent, and strong. Even with about 50 pounds of gear on top — including a monitor, monitor stand, PC tower, and speakers — the lift is smooth and stable. There’s no wobble at full extension, and transitions between presets are seamless.

The V3’s 355-pound weight capacity seems completely believable based on how smoothly it handles a fully loaded setup. There are even videos of people lying in the optional under-desk hammock — and after seeing this thing in action, I’m not surprised it can handle that.

For my son, the best part is how easy it is to adjust to his personally programmed sitting and standing positions, ready to go at the push of a button. For me, it’s peace of mind knowing he’s not hunched over a desk that’s too tall or too short for his growing frame.

The desk also features anti-collision, which I tested on myself, and I’m happy to say I’m still here to write about that desk. Kidding aside, I have a 3-year-old at home, and knowing the anti-collision works as advertised is a big relief.

The Verdict — The Ultimate Desk for Gamer Families

After researching and setting up the Uplift V3, it’s clear why so many people call it one of the best standing desks on the market. It’s a rare combination of build quality, flexibility, and personality. The Black Bamboo finish is stunning, the RGB accessories make it gamer-friendly, and the stability gives you the confidence to load it up with just about anything.

For my son, it seems to be the perfect gaming desk. For me, it’s the first setup that’s actually made his workspace ergonomic, organized, and fun.

Pros:

  • Rock-solid stability with whisper-quiet motors.
  • The huge height range fits kids and adults alike.
  • The premium Black Bamboo finish looks incredible.
  • The drawer and control pad can be mounted on either side.
  • RGB accessories add gaming flair.
  • Excellent cable management system.

Cons:

  • The drawer lacks sliding rails.
  • Some power ports are blocked by the hidden cable storage bracket design when using the 8-port attachable surge protector.
  • The power grommet also blocks some surge protector power ports when mounted to the metal rail.

Final Thoughts:

If you’re looking for a standing desk that can handle gaming, homework, professional work, and everything in between, the Uplift V3 should be near the top of your list. I could have gotten a lot deeper into the weeds with this review. From a sleek wood-based desk organizer to a rather comfy ergonomic chair and a stool that’s perfect for anyone who needs regular movement, Uplift has put a ton of thought into their desks and the accessories that complement those desks. But at its core, this review is about the company’s actual desk and in that regard it’s a full-on upgrade to how you work, play, and live.
