Just weeks after losing its creative director, Assassin's Creed Hexe has lost its game director. Benoit Richer has left Ubisoft to co-found Servo Games, an indie studio in Quebec. These back-to-back departures could spell bad news for Hex, which was touted as the 'dark' entry in the Assassin's Creed series.
Game director Clint Hocking left Ubisoft in February as part of a major restructuring of the company, but it's unclear whether Reacher followed suit for the same reason or purely to start his own indie studio. With devs always departing from projects, such high-profile releases right after each other can be a problem for a game.
Assassin's Creed Hexe Creative Director Leaves Ubisoft
We don't know much about Hex, except that it will be darker than other Assassin's Creed titles, and will likely feature witches and other mystical themes. Word from within the company was that it was shaping up so well that everyone at Ubisoft wanted to work on the project. However, these departures suggest otherwise.
Another update we got about the game was Assassin's Creed Head of Content Jean Guesdon saying “Our veteran team is building with great care here at Ubisoft Montreal. Expect a unique, dark, story-driven Assassin's Creed experience set at a pivotal moment in history.”
My hopes for Assassin's Creed now rest on Hexe
Shadows seems like a regular old Assassin's Creed, but sooner or later, Ubisoft needs to do something new with its time.
Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming also stated that the devs planned for Ezio to appear at some point in the game and teach the hero the ways of an assassin. Although it would be great to see everyone's favorite assassin again, there are chances that the devs will walk away from the idea even if the rumors are to be believed.
Hopefully, these exits won't affect Hexe's overall development too much. From the little we've heard, it looks like an interesting take on the series. However, Ubisoft has recently shown that it is not afraid to do nuclear projects, and hopefully Hex will not meet that fate.
