Who's playing the award-winning RPG in the Vatican is up to your imagination.
It goes without saying that Baldur's Gate 3 is popular. Larian's latest RPG has sold millions of copies worldwide and many of those millions are still playing a year later – there are 40,000 of you playing right now on Steam alone. You will almost certainly be aware of two of the millions of copies sold at the Vatican.
While it's an easy-to-find statistic on how many of you are playing on Steam at any given time, there are deep cuts into who's playing that only those involved in game development and distribution can access. Thankfully, Michael Daus, Larian's publishing director, not only has access to those numbers, but they're sharing some more interesting data, including Baldur's Gate 3's Vatican numbers.

You can easily defeat the Emperor in Baldur's Gate 3 by turning him into gold
I always told my dream parents that they should always believe in their soul, that they are indestructible.
Douse revealed that two copies of Baldur's Gate 3 have been sold to the Vatican, and a third copy is on a wish list. The publisher joked that they like to think that the wishlist is on Pope's Steam account and will come around to play when he has some free time. You know how it feels when you get to the end of a long day and don't have time to kick back and play anything for an hour or so? Well, imagine how often this happens when you are the head of the Catholic Church.
Are you one of two people playing Baldur's Gate 3 in the Vatican?
If you are, get in touch, I need to know more
I had no idea who was calling me home to the Vatican when I saw Doucet's tweet, so I did a little research to try and narrow down who might be trying to fix Karlach's infernal engine in one of the holiest places on earth. Of course, one of them could be the Pope, but it seems unlikely. There are also many priests and nuns living there, they may also be, or it may be a pair of Swiss guards guarding the capital of Catholicism.
The boring answer is that the two people playing Baldur's Gate 3 in Vatican City are probably ordinary workers who make up the majority of the small nation's population. There are over 3,000 who call the Vatican home, and you must have played Baldur's Gate 3 at least a couple of them, in the Vatican or otherwise.
Douse also shared how much time we've been collectively playing in the Baldur's Gate 3 Steam deck. More than 17 million hours, which, when broken down, equals about 2,000 years, and that's on a single platform's handheld arm. No need to think about the numbers we've racked up across all platforms.
Baldur's Gate 3 is the long-awaited next chapter in the Dungeons and Dragons-based series of RPGs. Developed by Divinity Creator Larian Studios, it puts you in the middle of Ferun's mind flayer attack more than a century after the events of its predecessor.
